The Nationals and Orioles both locked down their respective league’s East Division’s last night.  Could it be a possible Beltway World  Series?

Or how about a Freeway Series (I-5) between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Los Angeles Angels Of Orange County near Disneyland and Fullerton (or whatever Arte Moreno’s team us called now).

If that doesn’t tickle your fancy, maybe iconic close series of 1985 and 1989 respectively, meaning the I-70 series (KC vs STL) or the Bay Bridge (Earthquake Series), between the A’s and Giants.

Both of those winning clubs have not won the Fall Classic since those years.

Even Detroit and Pittsburgh are only 284 Miles apart, should they have a chance meeting.

Who is not here for the 1st time in 20 years – will probably be the Braves (whose playoff chances are on fumes), and the Yankees/Red Sox all failed to have at least one representative of those 3 in the Post Season since 1989, when the Cubs, Dodgers, A’s and Blue Jays made the playoffs.

2009 was the last time teams within close proximity to each other squared off in the World Series – when the Yanks took out the defending champion Phillies in 6 games. 

The Yankees/Mets 2000 “Subway Series” was the last time two teams in the same city played in the Fall Classic, something the 2 Los Angeles squad’s could do.

These teams have combined for 8 out of the last 17 World Series – but each of them had represented in the AL for every year since the WildCard was allotted. The last time neither team participated in the playoffs was 1993.

1990 – Boston made ALCS

1991 – Atlanta lost WS

1992 – Atlanta lost WS

1993 – Atlanta lost in NLCS

The Expos/Nats franchise has never been to the World Series, and the only other team to hold that distinction are the Seattle Mariners, who could do some damage if they make the Wild Card and then advance in the AL. The city of Washington has seen a World Series before, but not since 1933, when the Joe Cronin led Senators lost to the New York Giants in 5 games.

1994 – no World Series played but the Yankees had the best record in the AL

1995 – Atlanta won the World Series, NYY/BOS both lost in the ALDS

1996 – Yankees won the World Series over the Braves.

1997 – Braves lost the World Series, NYY lost in the ALDS

1998 – Yankees won the World Series, Atlanta lost in the NLCS Boston lost in the ALDS

1999 – Yankees won the World Series over the Braves. Boston lost in the ALCS

2000 – Yankees won the World Series, Boston and Atlanta lost in the LDS rounds.

The Orioles last won the World Series in 1983, and were closest next in the 1997 ALCS, before being ousted by the Indians. The Tigers won the Fall Classic Last in 1984, KC in 1985, LA Dodgers in 1988 Oakland in 1989. LA Angels in 2002. St. Louis won the title in 2011 and the Giants in 2012.   Pittsburgh last won the Fall Classic in 1979. Seattle and Washington have never appeared in a World Series – yet alone win one.

2001 – Yankees lost the World Series, Atlanta lost the NLCS

2002 – Yankees and the Braves both lost in the LDS round.

2003 – Yankees lost the World Series, Boston lost the ALCS and the Braves lost in the LDS

2004 – Boston won the World Series, Yankees lost the ALCS and Braves in the NLDS

2005 – All 3 clubs lost in the LDS round.

The Braves won 14 straight division titles from 1991 – 2005, and were helped out by te cancellation of the 1994 playoffs for that feat. They made it to 5 World Series in the 90’s winning just 1 of them in 1999. The club has made the postseason in three of the last four years, but that is in serious peril right now. Heading into action today, they are 5.5 games behind the 2nd Wild Card, while the Yankees are 6 games out of a playoff spot in the AL.

2006 – Yankees lost in the ALDS

2007 – Boston won the World Series, Yankees lost in the ALDS

2008 – Boston lost in the ALCS.

2009 – Yankees won the World Series, Boston lost LDS

2010 – Yankees lost in the ALCS, Atlanta lost in the NLDS

2011 – Yankees lost in the ALDS,

2012 – Yankees lost in the ALCS, Braves lost in the NLWC.

2013 – Boston won the World Series, Atlanta lost in the NLDS

2014 – Boston officially eliminated, Yankees and Braves on Wild Card’s death’s door.
