Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (May 15th) – Updated Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings
Raul Ibanez hit a first inning grand slam and later added a second homer as the Mariners demolished the Yankees, 12-2.
Jon Lester pitched seven strong innings, helping the Red Sox stop a slide and beat the Tampa Bay Rays handily, 9-2.
Shin-Soo Choo homered twice and scored three times after going 4-5 as the Reds shut out the Marlins 4-0.
And Zack Greinke came back from a broken clavicle to throw into the 6th inning for the Dodgers 3-1 win over the Nationals.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (May 14th) – Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings
Clayton Kershaw pitched 8 2/3 shutout innings, walking only one and striking out 11 and scored as the Dodgers beat the Nationals 2-0.
Neil Walker got on base four times with two hits and two walks. His 8th inning single set up the game tying rally as the Pirates beat the Brewers in extra innings, 4-3.
Matt Moore settled down after giving up a three run homer to David Ortiz in the first. He let up only one more hit, striking out 8 as he collected his seventh win against no losses, leading the Rays to a 5-3 win over Boston.
Mitch Moreland homered twice including in the 10th inning as the Rangers hung on to defeat the A’s, 6-5.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday ( May 13th) – Updated Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings
Justin Upton haunted his old team, the Arizona Diamondbacks, with a 4-5 performance including a double and a massive two run homer to center field as the Braves won 10-1.
Travis Wood pitched seven shutout innings against the Rockies and collected a pair of hits including and RBI double as the Cubs pounded Colorado, 9-1.
Justin Masterson pitched a masterful complete game shutout of the Yankees, letting up only 4 hits as the Indians won by the narrowest of margins, 1-0.
And Aaron Hicks not only hit two homers for the Twins in their 10-3 victory over the White Sox, but he stole Adam Dunn‘s home run with his glove. So as far as the Twins were concerned he was +3 in home runs, adding two and removing one.

Who Owned Baseball May.12th – Plus Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings
Chris Sale threw the third one hit shutout of the weekend as the White Sox (wearing their wonderfully dreadful 1980’s throwbacks) defeated the Angels 3-0
Jose Bautista homered twice and walked, driving in three runs as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Red Sox in Fenway 12-4.
Marco Scutaro went 2-5 with a homer as the Giants defeated the Braves 5-1.
And Jorge De La Rosa answered the gems pitched by the Cardinals by holding St. Louis hitless into the 7th as the Rockies won 8-2.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (May 11th) – Updated Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings
Adam Wainwright took a no hitter into the 8th inning and pitched a complete game 2 hit shutout as the Cardinals defeated the Rockies, 3-0.
Jose Tabata helped the Pirates demolish the Mets 11-2 by going 4-5 and a homer, three runs and three RBI. He was a triple short of the cycle.
Toronto’s bullpen may have prevented him from getting the win, but Mark Buehrle pitched seven solid letting up only 1 run in Fenway Park. The Blue Jays won 3-2 in a game where Clay Buchholz was terrific over 8 innings.
Justin Morneau drove in three key runs in the third and fourth innings as the Twins came from behind to beat the Orioles, 8-5.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (May 8th) + Updated Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings
Paul Goldschmidt was a one man wrecking crew, smacking two homers and driving in all three Arizona runs as the Diamondbacks beat the Dodgers 3-2.
Mike Minor held the Cincinnati Reds to one run over 7 innings and striking out 7 as the Braves were triumphant, winning the series on the road.
Felix Hernandez pitched 8 solid innings letting up only one run and one walk as the Mariners held on to a 2-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.
And Adam Rosales smashed a clutch 2 out game tying home run in the 9th inning for the A’s. He DID do that. Everyone saw it. Everyone saw the video. Just because Angel Hernandez botched the call doesn’t take away from the FACT that he hit that homer in that situation.
History will not record it as a home run and the A’s game tying rally was squashed even though it actually succeeded. I can not right that wrong and I can not change the past.
But I CAN increase the WOB total for Adam Rosales by one.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (May 7th) + Updated Yearly WOB Standings
Matt Harvey may not have pitched a perfect game, or a no hitter, or even get credit for the Mets 1-0 win over the White Sox. But any pitcher who throws 9 innings, no runs, no walks, 1 hit and 12 strikeouts is going to be honored here.
Shin-Soo Choo hit a pair of home runs including the walk off shot with 2 outs in the 9th as the Reds stunned the Braves, 5-4
Scott Diamond threw his fourth straight good start. He pitched 7 shutout innings against the Red Sox, surrendering only 3 hits and no walks as the Twins won 6-1.
Matt Wieters drove in 3 of Baltimore’s 4 runs including the 8th inning go ahead tally as the Orioles squeaked by the Royals, 4-3.

Who Owned Baseball – Updated May 7th, 2013
Stephen Drew hit a game tying homer and a walk off double, going 4-5, as the Red Sox beat the Twins in extra innings, 6-5.
The Kansas City Royals lost in extra innings to the White Sox, 2-1. But don’t blame Royals starter James Shields. His 8 shutout inning performance where he let up only 2 hits and recorded nine strikeouts were enough to own baseball even if his bullpen couldn’t hold the 1-0 lead.
Andrelton Simmons homered twice and went 3-4 with 4 RBI in the Braves 7-4 defeat of the Cincinnati Reds.
Scott Feldman threw 7 shutout innings against the Texas as the Cubs beat the favored Rangers. The final score was 9-2.

Miguel Cabrera had a night so good that even a Sabermetrics fan would have to concede he owned baseball. The Detroit Tigers star got on base five times against the Houston Astros, with a walk and four hits, including two home runs. He scored three times and drove in six runs, but we are not supposed to notice that anymore.
Jeremy Guthrie of the Kansas City Royals pitched a 4 hit 2-0 complete game shutout of the Chicago White Sox. He is undefeated in his last 17 starts dating back to last season.
Troy Tulowitzki went 3-3 with 3RBI as the Rockies defeated David Price and the Tampa Bay Rays and remained tied for first place.
Miami pitcher Jose Fernandez held the Phillies to a single hit, no runs and nine strikeouts against one walk over seven innings as the Marlins prevailed.

Who Owns Baseball – Updated May.03/2013

Domonic Brown went 3-4 including a home run and an RBI single leading the Phillies past the Marlins, 7-2.
Dan Haren threw 8 shutout innings, letting up only 4 hits, 1 walk and one earned run as his Washington Nationals beat the rival Atlanta Braves, 3-1, at Turner Field.
Austin Jackson got three hits and scored twice, including he leadoff double in the 14th inning that lead the winning run. The Tigers won a 7-3, 14 inning marathon with the Astros.
Baltimore starter Chris Tillman shut down the Angels 5-1. He pitched 8 shutout innings letting up only three hits.

Who Owns Baseball – Updated May.02/2013
Clay Buchholz pitched 7 shutout innings, striking out 8 and collected his sixth win as the first place Red Sox man handled the Blue Jays 10-1.
The Kansas City Royals came from behind to beat the Tampa Bay Rays and took over first place thanks in part to Lorenzo Cain‘s 2-5 two RBI performance.
Brandon Belt‘s dramatic two out, two strike, 8th inning three run homer helped turn a Giants loss into a victory over Arizona.
And Washington’s Jordan Zimmermann dominated division rival Atlanta with 8 shutout innings, letting up only 2 hits, no walks and 8 strikeouts as the Nats squeaked by 2-0.

Who Owns Baseball – Updated May.01/2013
Edwin Encarnacion of the Toronto Blue Jays hit a pair of home runs including the go ahead shot in the 7th inning against first place Boston.
Justin Verlander pitched 7 strong innings, striking out 8, as the Tigers beat the Minnesota Twins and kept their spot on the top of the standings.
Rickie Weeks of the Brewers got on base four times, scored three times, drove in five and homered as Milwaukee beat Pittsburgh 12-8.
And in a night of terrific National League pitching (including wonderful performances from Tim Hudson, Hyun Jin Ryu, Kevin Slowey, Bronson Arroyo, Madison Bumgarner, Trevor Cahill and Jeremy Hefner) it was Jaime Garcia who won the night. He pitched 8 outstanding innings of a tense 2-1 Cardinal victory over the rival Cincinnati Reds.

Who Owns Baseball – Updated April.30/2013
It was a wild night of baseball with many heroes. But only four can own baseball.
Despite the heroics of Brandon Moss and the 19th inning “Stagger off” homer in Oakland, I am declaring that Carlos Corporan of the Houston Astros owned baseball. His double in the first put the Yankees on their heels and his home run helped put them away. And then he showed toughness by staying in the game at catcher after he looked injured trying to take third.
With all due respect to Joe Saunders of the Mariners and Ubaldo Jimenez of the Indians, Oakland’s Brett Anderson owned baseball last night. He came into the game in the 13th inning with a bad ankle and pitched into the 18th. On a night where he knew he had off, he wound up essentially pitching a quality start and all after 10:30PM!
Willin Rosario went 3-4 with a key home run as the first place Rockies blew out the Dodgers in Chavez Ravine 12-2.
And Brewers ace Yovani Gallardo not only pitched seven strong innings but he hit a home run in Milwaukee’s 10-4 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Just how far can Bryce Harper improve during his 2nd season? If he can improve by about 15 % might we see a 30 HR/ 30 SB, year with around 120 Runs Scored and 80 Extra Base Hits? This would vault the 20 Year Old LF into MVP consideration. He hit 2 HRs on Opening Day – and is crushing regular hits as well. Harper is 6 – 12 with 2 HRs and 3 RBI through 3 games. The Nats swept the Marlins in 3 straight.

On my podcast, The Sully Baseball Daily Podcast (available on iTunes), I have been keeping track of a title of my creation. It is the title of “Who Owns Baseball?” for a given day.
Essentially it is the star of the day, with an American League and National League hitter and pitcher being honored. Its origin stems from the Opening Day heroics of Bryce Harper and Clayton Kershaw. I wrote on Twitter that they “owned baseball today.”
And I thought why not keep track of that? Why not follow an entire season, as I am going to do anyway, and declare a pitcher and a hitter from each league as the “Owners of Baseball.”
