Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (March 21) – Updated Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings

Clayton Kershaw pitched into the 7th inning, letting up one run and walking just won, getting the win for the Dodgers, 3-1.
Scott Van Slyke homered and doubled, leading the way to the Dodgers 3-1 triumph over the Diamondbacks.
Paul Goldschmidt’s 2 hits were in a losing effort for Arizona against Los Angeles in Sydney, but worthy for 1/2 a WOB.

For the second year in a row, I will be doing my own personal metric for the player and pitcher of the year.
It is called “WOB”.
I explained it last year HERE, but let me do my best to explain again, because I made some adjustments for the new season.
So what is WOB?
“Who Owns Baseball?” is my own personal “SullyMetric” for determining which player had the best performance of the day.
At the end of each day, I figure out which American League and which National League pitcher had the most memorable and admirable day. I declare each one of them as the ones who “Owned Baseball” for that day.
And because I am an absolute lunatic, I keep a tally for the whole season and see which player has the highest “WOB”.
It is not a random selection. Statistical analysis plays a big part in determining who adds to their WOB total. But there are other factors. Read the rest of this entry
Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (September.30th) – Updated Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings

David Price went the distance, wiggling out of trouble and letting up just 2 runs as he beat the Rangers, 5-2 and gave the Rays one of the two Wild Card spots.
Evan Longoria nearly hit for the cycle, going 3-4, driving in a pair with a homer and was the offensive hero in the Rays 5-2 playoff ticket punching victory in Texas.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (September.29th) – Updated Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings

Henderson Alvarez threw the 6th no hitter in Marlins history. He needed help from a run scoring wild pitch to end the game which he won and put himself in the history books, 1-0.
Hunter Pence brought the Giants back into the game with a 2 run single in the 7th then ended it with a walk off single in the 9th, polishing off a 7-6 win over the Padres.
Ubaldo Jimenez pitched into the 7th, giving up just one run and walking one while striking out 13. He led the Indians past the Twins, 5-1 and clinched a playoff spot for the Tribe.
Geovany Soto hit a tie breaking double in the 6th and smacked a home run for insurance in the 8th as the Rangers topped the Angels 6-2 and forced a tie breaker.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (September.28th) – Updated Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings

Andy Pettitte ended his remarkable career with a complete game victory, letting up just 1 run and 5 hits as the Yankees topped the Astros, 2-1.
Brad Miller homered twice and drove in 5 runs as the Mariners beat the AL West Champion A’s, 7-5.
Nathan Eovaldi pitched well over 6 innings, wiggling out of trouble and yielding only a single run against the Tigers. He did not get the decision but his pitching performance set up the Marlins 2-1 extra inning triumph.
Neil Walker launched a pair of home runs that sparked the Pirates power outburst while winning against the Reds 8-3 and clinched home field in the Wild Card Game..

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (September.27th) – Updated Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings

A.J. Burnett pitched 8 terrific innings against rival Cincinnati, earning the victory after yielding only 1 run and 5 hits. Pittsburgh topped the Reds 4-1 and put them on the verge of home field in the Wild Card game.
Matt Holliday reached base 5 times, homered and scored twice, leading the Cardinals to a 7-0 drubbing of the Cubs and a clinching of the NL Central title.
James Shields finished his first season in Kansas City with another terrific game. He went 7 innings, 4 hits, 1 runs, walked just one White Sox batter and struck out 10, earning his 13th win, 6-1.
Drew Stubbs powered the Indians a little closer to the Wild Card by getting on base 3 times, scoring all three times including a homer. The Tribe topped the Twins 12-6.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (September.26th) – Updated Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings

Jurickson Profar came off the bench to crush a walk off homer that kept the Rangers in the Wild Card hunt by topping the Angels, 6-5.
Tommy Medica got on base 3 times and scored the winning run in the bottom of the 11th, giving Padres fans something to cheer about in PetCo’s season finale, 3-2 over Arizona.
Alex Cobb was not intimidated by an emotional Yankee Stadium crowd. He kept New York off the scoreboard with 7 innings of 3 hit shutout ball, giving Tampa Bay the 4-0 victory and inched closer to the post season.
Tim Lincecum pitched what could have been his final game as a member of the Giants. He made it a good one, letting up only 2 runs over 7 innings. He did not get the decision but was the star of San Francisco’s 3-2 victory over the arch rival Dodgers.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (September.25th) – Updated Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings

Max Scherzer truly earned his 21st victory of the season. He threw 7 shutout innings, striking out 10 Twins and letting only 2 get hits. The 1-0 triumph clinched the AL Central for the Tigers.
Evan Longoria pushed Tampa Bay closer to a playoff spot and eliminated the Yankees altogether. He went 3-5 with a pair of homers and 4 RBI, leading the way as the Rayswon another laugher in the Bronx, 8-3.
Kyle Lohse was effective and economical in his dominating shutout of the Braves. He needed only 89 pitches to go 9 innings where he let up only 2 hits and no walks as the Brewers won, 4-0.
Darnell McDonald broke open a 1-1 tie with a three run homer that gave the Cubs a lead they would never relinquish against the Pirates. The final score in Wrigley was 4-2, Chicago.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (September.24th) – Updated Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings

Michael Wacha no hit the Washington Nationals until there were 2 outs in the 9th inning. He let up an infield single, but his 8 2/3 innings were enough for St. Louis’ 2-0 win.
James Paxton dominated for 7 innings, letting up 4 hits, walking none and striking out 10 as the Mariners seriously damaged the Royals post season hopes, 4-0.
Pedro Alvarez doubled twice and drove in 3 leading the Pirates closer to home field in the Wild Card game by topping the Cubs, 8-2.
Jason Giambi came off the bench and delivered a 2 out 2 run walk off come from behind homer that gave Cleveland the 5-4 win over the White Sox and turned what could have been a devastating loss into possibly the highlight of the Indians’ season.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (September.23rd) – Updated Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings

Alex Rios hit for the cycle, finishing a 4-4 night with 3 runs scored and 4 RBI as the Rangers kept up in the Wild Card race with a 12-0 pounding of the Astros.
Wade Davis entered a game with the winning run on third and the Royals season on the line in the 10th. He wiggled out of the jam with some help from his outfield defense and pitched a 1-2-3 11th and got the decision in Kansas City’s 6-5 potential season saving win against the Mariners.
Shin-Soo Choo went 3-6 with 2 RBI, a pair of stolen bases and the walk off hit that put the Reds into October as they squeaked past the Mets, 3-2.
Charlie Morton was brilliant over 7 shutout innings, letting up only 3 hits and walking 1. He did not get the decision but his dominating performance set up the Pirates 2-1 victory over the Cubs, clinching at least a Wild Card for Pittsburgh.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (September.22nd) – Updated Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings

With one swing of his bat, Justin Maxwell gave the Royals hope, clinched a division title for the Oakland A’s and sent the Rangers reeling. His 10th inning, walk off grand slam sealed a 4-0 triumph for the Royals that eliminated the Rangers from the AL West race and kept KC in the Wild Card hunt.
The late inning heroics in Kansas City were set up by the brilliant 8 inning shutout performance by James Shields. He kept the Rangers off the board and gave the Royals a chance. He may not of received the decision in the 4-0 KC win, but he made it possible.
Billy Hamilton continues to be everything advertised and then some. He went 3-6 with a double and two more stolen bases. Now batting lead off and being a spark plug, the Reds clobbered the Pirates in a critical playoff match up, 11-3.
Yusmeiro Petit was not intimidated by the Yankee Stadium ceremonies. He was terrific into the 7th inning, matching zeros and letting up a single solo homer. He did not get the decision, but he set up the Giants 2-1 victory over the Yankees.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (September.21st) – Updated Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings

Alex Cobb gave the Rays bullpen a much needed rest after Friday’s 18 inning marathon with 8 1/3 excellent innings, letting up one run and striking out 12 Orioles as Tampa Bay stayed in the Wild Card lead, 5-1.
Clayton Kershaw pitched 7 scoreless innings, striking out 10 and walking 2, earning the 4-0 win for the Dodgers in San Diego and solidifying his Cy Young credentials.
Alberto Callaspo went 4-5 including a homer, driving in 3, helping the A’s top the Twins 9-1 and cut the AL West magic number to 1..
Russell Martin clubbed a game tying home run off of Homer Bailey and helped the Pirates win a critical Wild Card match up against Cincinnati, 4-2.

Jon Lester pitched 7 strong innings, giving up just 1 run and striking out 8 as he earned his 15th win, 6-3 over Toronto, and clinched the AL East crown for the Red Sox.
Torii Hunter reached base 5 times, driving in 3 and scoring 2 as the Tigers moved closer to a Division Title with a 12-5 thrashing of the White Sox.
Jordan Zimmermann earned his 19th victory this season for the Nationals by tossing a 2 hit, 9 strikeout complete game shutout of the Marlins, 8-0.
Matt Adams got on base 4 times including a game tying single in the 7th and a go ahead homer in the 9th as the Cardinals won a wild game in Milwaukee, 7-6.

Josh Hamilton hit a game tying homer in the ninth and drove in the winning run in the 11th as the Angels stunned the A’s in Oakland, 5-4.
Billy Hamilton got on base 5 times with a double, two singles and two walks, stole 4 bases and scored twice including in the game winning 13th inning rally as the Reds topped the Astros 6-5.
Hisashi Iwakuma saw his road scoreless inning streak extend to 25 as he went 8 innings letting up only 4 hits and getting the 8-0 victoru over the Tigers.
Adam Wainwright pitched and hit the Cardinals closer to a Division Title. He threw 7 1/3 innings letting up 3 runs, a good total for Coors Field. He also went 3-3 including a double and 2 RBI picking up the 5-4 decision against Colorado.

R.A. Dickey dominated the Yankees over 7 shutout innings, getting out of a bases loaded jam and striking out 8 as the Blue Jays prevailed, 2-0.
Ian Kinsler homered on the first pitch and gave the Rangers a lift right away. He finished 2-5 with 2 runs scored and 3 RBI, leading Texas to a crucial 7-1 victory over Tampa.
Tanner Roark threw 7 innings of 2 hit shutout ball, walking just one as the Nationals topped the Braves 4-0 and completed a double header sweep.
Matt Holliday collected 4 hits including a homer, missing the cycle by a triple, and got on base 5 times as the Cardinals beat the Rockies, 11-4, and moved back into first place by themselves.

Alexei Ramirez scored twice in the first inning and reached base five times, homering and missing the cycle by just a triple. He also drove in three as the White Sox embarrassed the Twins, 12-1.
Alex Cobb retired the first 9 batters he faced and gave the Rays 8 strong innings, letting up just 2 runs and striking out 10 Rangers as Tampa Bay finally won a crucial game, 6-2.
Andrew Cashner nearly threw the first no hitter in San Diego Padres history when he held the Pirates hitless for the first six frames. He settled for a 1 hit, 2-0 shutout of Pittsbugh for his first major league complete game.
And Cliff Lee was brilliant on the mound with his 8 inning, 14 strikeout domination of the Marlins. But he is on this list for his bat as he went 3-4 with a triple and 4 RBI, winning the game for the Phillies in every way, 12-2.

Hunter Pence kept his mad contract dash with a pair of homers and helped the Giants squeak past the Dodgers, 4-3.
Nick Swisher homered twice and helped the Indians pound the White Sox 7-1 and climb to within 1/2 a game of the playoffs.
Burch Smith threw 7 three hit shutout innings against the Braves, striking out 10 and walking just 2, getting the 4-0 win for the Padres.
Max Scherzer failed to get his 20th win, but it was not his fault. He held the Royals to 5 hits, 1 walk and a single run over 7 innings while striking out 11. The bullpen surrendered the lead but the Tigers would prevail, 3-2.

Brandon Belt led an unexpectedly potent Giants offense with a 5-6 performance, driving in 6 including a 2 run homer as San Francisco demolished the Dodgers, 19-3.
Kris Medlen brought Atlanta closer to a Division Title with a solid 7 1/3 inning performance of 4 hit shut out ball of the Padres. The Braves won 2-1
Lonnie Chisenhall went 2-4 and clubbed a 3 run homer that helped the Indians cruise to an 8-1 thrashing of the White Sox.
In a day full of big pitching performances, nobody was bigger than Bartolo Colon. He let a single first inning run hold up with 8 shutout innings, walking just 1 batter as the A’s continued to pull away from the Rangers, 1-0.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (September.13th) – Updated Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings

Jarrod Saltalamacchia turned a tight 4-4 game into a comfortable 8-4 Boston lead with one swing of his bat. His 7th inning grand slam was the difference in the opener of the Red Sox/Yankees series.
Hisashi Iwakuma was outstanding against the Cardinals. He threw 7 shutout innings, letting up just 3 hits and 2 walks. Unfortunately for him, the Mariners bullpen was not up to the task and Seattle would fall to St. Louis, 2-1 in 10 innings.
Wilin Rosario got a pair of hits and drove in 4 including 2 in the Rockies tie breaking 7th inning rally as Colorado beat Arizona, 7-5.

Freddie Freeman went 3-4 with a homer and a walk, driving in a pair, helping the Braves beat the Marlins, 6-1.
Jeff Locke pitched the Pirates back into first place by throwing 7 innings, letting only 3 Cubs get hits and letting up just a single run, getting the 3-1 win.

James Shields lived up to his “Big James” nickname by throwing 8 innings of 4 hit, 2 run ball against rival Cleveland, getting the 5-2 win that pulled Kansas City to within 2 games of a playoff spot..
Robinson Cano drove in two runs including a go ahead 9th inning home run that put the Yankees ahead for good as they topped Baltimore 5-4.
Jose Fernandez made the most of his final start of the season. He went 7 innings, letting up 1 run and homered. While his celebration got the Braves mad, he got the last laugh with a 5-2 victory.
Justin Morneau helped his new team keep pace in the Division race, getting 4 hits and scoring twice as the Pirates finished the sweep of the Rangers, 7-5.

Alfonso Soriano hit a pair of home runs that could have saved the Yankees season. The second one came in a come from behind rally that sealed a 7-5 win in Baltimore.
Shelby Miller pitched shutout ball into the 7th inning and held off the Brewers as the Cardinals won 4-2 and stayed a game up in first place.

Juan Uribe clubbed 3 of the Dodgers 6 home runs and finished off the night legging out an infield hit, leading the way in Los Angeles’ 8-1 thrashing of the Diamondbacks.
Josmil Pinto continued his hot hitting, smacking 3 doubles and walking, scoring twice and driving in one as the Twins beat the Angels, 6-3.
Chris Sale was outstanding against the Tigers, throwing 8 innings, giving up only 4 hits, 1 walk and 1 run while striking out 8. He got his 11th win, a 5-1 triumph for the White Sox.
Gerrit Cole won a spectacular pitchers duel in Texas by the thinest of margins, throwing 7 shutout innings, winning 1-0 and clinching the Pirates first winning season since 1992. (Yes, I am quite aware of the Nationals/Mets game… the circumstances of the Pirates game was more impressive.)

Bruce Chen kept the Royals in the playoff picture with 7 strong innings, giving up 2 runs and walking none, getting the 5-2 win over the Tigers.
Michael Wacha not only pitched 7 shutout inning against division rival Pittsburgh, but he drove in a pair of runs as well, earning the decision as St. Louis topped the Pirates, 9-2 to complete the sweep.
James Loney woke up a dormant Tampa lineup by getting on base 4 times and sparking the 8th inning come from behind rally with a game tying double and coming around to score later in the frame. The Rays would get a desperately needed victory over Seattle, 4-1.
Jay Bruce homered twice off of Clayton Kershaw, setting up the Reds eventual walk off 3-2 win over the Dodgers.

Freddy Galvis collected 4 hits including a walk off shot in the bottom of the ninth, giving the Phillies a 6-5 win over first place Atlanta.
Dan Straily threw 7 shutout innings, striking out 7 and walking one, keeping Oakland in first place with a 2-1 victory over Houston.
Nick Swisher doubled home Cleveland’s first run and then homered in the second inning, propelling the Indians past the Mets, 9-4 and within a game of the Wild Card.

Scott Feldman pitched Baltimore’s first complete game of the season, a 4-0 five hit shutout of the White Sox, that allowed the Orioles to move up in the Wild Card standings.
Joey Votto emerged from a prolonged slump to get on base 4 times with 2 walks and 2 hits, including a come from behind 2 run homer that was the difference as the Reds beat the Dodgers, 3-2.
Josh Donaldson helped propel the A’s back into first place by themselves by getting three hits, scoring three times and driving in 2 and hitting a homer and a stolen base as Oakland beat Houston, 7-5.

Miguel Gonzalez gave the Orioles 7 innings 4 hit, 1 run ball, getting the decision as the Birds topped the White Sox, 3-1.
With no dominating starting pitching in the National League, Brad Ziegler closed out the Diamondbacks victory against the Giants and kept their thin playoff hopes alive.

David Ortiz delivered 3 hits including 2 of the 8 Red Sox homers. His second home run was career hit humber 2,000 as Boston clobbered Detroit in a 20-4 laugher.
Dillon Gee pitched 7 terrific innings, letting up 1 run and 4 hits and got the 5-2 victory for the Mets over the first place Braves.
Jarrod Parker did his job in a divisional showdown against Texas. He pitched 6 innings letting up just 5 hits and 2 runs while walking none, giving the A’s the chance to run up the score in an 11-4 blow out that put Oakland back into a first place tie.

Doug Fister came into Fenway Park and shut out the Red Sox over 7 no run, 4 hit innings. The Tigers won the potential ALCS preview by a score of 3-0.
