With the latest signings (by Baltimore) of Nelson Cruz and Ubaldo Jimenez, there is now just 3 Free Agents who come with the price tag of your 1st RD pick (or 1st available pick if you have been busy already this winter).
SS Stephen Drew is still on the open market despite several rumors about the Big Apple, DH/1B Kendrys Morales is on the board, with teams dwindling in interest, and SP Ervin Santana rounds out the list.
Agents of these gentlemen are now threatening to hold out their players until after the MLB Amateur Draft (when the Draft Pick is no longer forfeited), in order to turn the leverage back to their guys.
I am not sure that is such a great idea, particularly in the cases of the hitters, who are not likely to warrant more than 3 year deals apiece. Read the rest of this entry

Receiving 1 WOO
Miguel Cabrera crushed a 2 run homer that seemed to give the Tigers an insurmountable lead. It would hold as the Tigers won 3-0.
Justin Verlander flirted first with perfection and then with a no hitter. He would finish with 8 innings of 2 hit, 1 walk shutout ball with 10 strikeouts, clinching the Division Series 3-0 over Oakland.
Receiving 1/2 WOO:
Sonny Gray matched Verlander over 3 innings. He was not as masterful as he was in Game 2, but he kept the A’s in the game. It wasn’t enough as the Tigers won 3-0.

Receiving 1 WOO
Craig Breslow pitched 1 2/3 solid innings of relief, striking out 4 and getting the decision as the Red Sox eliminated the Rays 3-1.
Jacoby Ellsbury got on base twice, stole a base, possibly helped cause Tampa’s catcher to miss a wild pitch and scored the go ahead run in the Red Sox 3-1 clinching victory.
Doug Fister may not have been dominant, but his 6 innings prevented the A’s from pulling away and helped set up the Tigers come from behind 8-6 win.
Jhonny Peralta clubbed a 3 run homer in the 5th that tied the game helped turn a potential elimination game for the Tigers into a wild 8-6 victory against Oakland.
Receiving 1/2 WOO:
Coco Crisp collected 4 hits, scored 3 times and drove in a run, doing everything he could to lead the A’s to victory as they fell short to Detroit, 8-6.
Yunel Escobar got 3 hits and scored the Rays lone run in their 3-1 loss to the Red Sox.
Matt Moore came out of the bullpen and prevented the Red Sox from putting up much of a fight over two scoreless innings in the Rays 3-1 defeat by Boston.
Dan Straily was brilliant the first four innings and solid through 6, letting up only 4 hits, striking out 8 and walking none. It wasn’t enough as the Tigers came back to win, 8-6.

Receiving 1 WOO
Alex Cobb was not on top of his game but he kept the Red Sox from breaking open the game in his 5 innings of work and helped set up Tampa’s 5-4 come from behind win.
Matt Holliday provided all the offense the Cardinals with need with his 2 run homer that sparked St. Louis’ 2-1 win over the Pirates.
Clayton Kershaw pitched on short rest and threw 6 innings with 2 unearned runs, 6 strikeouts and 1 walk. He would not get the decision but the Dodgers would prevail, 5-4.
Evan Longoria saved the series with one swing of his bat by launching a 2 out 3 run homer in the 5th that woke the Rays up. Tampa would go on to win 5-4.
Dan Otero worked out of trouble in two scoreless innings from the bullpen and prevented the Tigers from staging a comeback as the A’s won 6-3.
Seth Smith got two hits including a 2 run homer that gave the A’s insurance in their 6-3 win in Detroit.
Juan Uribe launched a 2 run 8th inning go ahead come from behind homer that gave the Dodgers the clinching lead over the Braves that they would not relinquish, 5-4.
Michael Wacha threw a no hitter into the 8th inning and kept the Cardinals alive, defeating the Pirates in Pittsburgh, letting up just 1 run and 1 hit for a final of 2-1.
Receiving 1/2 WOO:
Jose Alvarez stopped the bleeding in Detroit with 3 innings of no hit shutout ball out of the bullpen. It would not be enough as the Tigers could not score or mount a comeback, losing 6-3.
Pedro Alvarez broke up the no hitter with a towering home run that brought the Pirates to within one run. It would be practically all of the Pirates offense in their 2-1 loss.
Jacoby Ellsbury got three hits, two of them doubles, and a stolen base and scored 2 of the Red Sox 4 runs in their 5-4 loss to the Rays.
Freddy Garcia stunned the Dodger Stadium crowd with a wonderful 6 inning performance where his lone blemishes came on a pair of solo homers. He struck out 6 and let up only 2 runs and would have received the win if the bullpen did not melt down in the 8th.
Charlie Morton let only 2 Cardinals score and allowed only 3 hits while pitching into the 6th in the Pirates 2-1 loss.
Jhonny Peralta drove in 1/3 of the Tigers entire run total for the series with his game tying 2 run single in the 4th. The Tigers would lose 6-3.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (September.21st) – Updated Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings

Alex Cobb gave the Rays bullpen a much needed rest after Friday’s 18 inning marathon with 8 1/3 excellent innings, letting up one run and striking out 12 Orioles as Tampa Bay stayed in the Wild Card lead, 5-1.
Clayton Kershaw pitched 7 scoreless innings, striking out 10 and walking 2, earning the 4-0 win for the Dodgers in San Diego and solidifying his Cy Young credentials.
Alberto Callaspo went 4-5 including a homer, driving in 3, helping the A’s top the Twins 9-1 and cut the AL West magic number to 1..
Russell Martin clubbed a game tying home run off of Homer Bailey and helped the Pirates win a critical Wild Card match up against Cincinnati, 4-2.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (September.19th) – Updated Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings

Hanley Ramirez hit a pair of homers including a game tying shot in the 7th. He would go 4-5 with 4 runs batted in and set up the Dodgers clinching of the NL West crown, 8-7 over the bitter Diamondbacks.
Gerrit Cole struck out 12 in 6 innings, letting up just one run and helping the Pirates inch closer to first place and avoid a sweep by San Diego, 10-1.
Coco Crisp got on base 3 times and smacked the go ahead 2 run homer in the 8th that put the A’s on top for good, 8-6 over Minnesota
John Lackey took a no hitter into the 7th and settled for a complete game 2 hit, 1 run masterpiece as the Red Sox won 3-1 over Baltimore and clinched at least a Wild Card berth this October.
They all owned baseball on September 19, 2013.

Brandon Belt led an unexpectedly potent Giants offense with a 5-6 performance, driving in 6 including a 2 run homer as San Francisco demolished the Dodgers, 19-3.
Kris Medlen brought Atlanta closer to a Division Title with a solid 7 1/3 inning performance of 4 hit shut out ball of the Padres. The Braves won 2-1
Lonnie Chisenhall went 2-4 and clubbed a 3 run homer that helped the Indians cruise to an 8-1 thrashing of the White Sox.
In a day full of big pitching performances, nobody was bigger than Bartolo Colon. He let a single first inning run hold up with 8 shutout innings, walking just 1 batter as the A’s continued to pull away from the Rangers, 1-0.

A. J. Griffin moved the A’s closer to a second straight Division Title by holding the Twins to 2 hits, 1 walk and 1 run while striking out 8 over 7 innings in Oakland’s 8-2 victory.
Freddie Freeman went 3-4 with a homer and a walk, driving in a pair, helping the Braves beat the Marlins, 6-1.
Jeff Locke pitched the Pirates back into first place by throwing 7 innings, letting only 3 Cubs get hits and letting up just a single run, getting the 3-1 win.

Adam Wainwright pitched the Cardinals back into first place, tossing 7 masterful 2 hit shutout innings against the Pirates. He struck out 8 and walked only 2 as St. Louis triumphed, 5-0.
Freddy Galvis collected 4 hits including a walk off shot in the bottom of the ninth, giving the Phillies a 6-5 win over first place Atlanta.
Dan Straily threw 7 shutout innings, striking out 7 and walking one, keeping Oakland in first place with a 2-1 victory over Houston.
Nick Swisher doubled home Cleveland’s first run and then homered in the second inning, propelling the Indians past the Mets, 9-4 and within a game of the Wild Card.

Matt Adams came off the bench and became the first Cardinals player ever to hit two extra inning home runs in the same game. Both game St. Louis the lead and the second one was the eventual game winner in the 16th, topping the Reds 5-4.
David Ortiz delivered 3 hits including 2 of the 8 Red Sox homers. His second home run was career hit humber 2,000 as Boston clobbered Detroit in a 20-4 laugher.
Dillon Gee pitched 7 terrific innings, letting up 1 run and 4 hits and got the 5-2 victory for the Mets over the first place Braves.
Jarrod Parker did his job in a divisional showdown against Texas. He pitched 6 innings letting up just 5 hits and 2 runs while walking none, giving the A’s the chance to run up the score in an 11-4 blow out that put Oakland back into a first place tie.

Francisco Liriano shut down the mighty Cardinals lineup with 8 innings of no run, 2 hit ball. He got his 15th win, 5-0, and the Pirates moved into a first place tie with St. Louis.
Todd Helton hit a pair of three run homers, the second one being career hit number 2,499. His 6 RBI were the difference in Colorado’s 9-6 victory over the Reds.
Jarrod Parker held the Rays to a single run over his first 7 innings of work. Eventually he left in the 8th and the bullpen lost the lead, but his performance helped set up Oakland’s 4-3 victory and moved them into the top Wild Card spot.
Dustin Ackley went 4-5 with a triple and 4 RBI, leading the Mariners past the Astros, 7-1.
They all owned baseball on August 30, 2013.

Coco Crisp homered, doubled, singled, drove in 2, scored a pair and made a highlight film catch, helping the A’s win a wild back and forth 8-6 game over the Tigers.
Allan Craig was a triple shy of the cycle and hit a 2 out come from behind 7th inning grand slam to put St. Louis ahead of Cincinnati in a crucial divisional victory, 8-6.
Zack Greinke put the Dodgers back in the win column by pitching shutout ball into the 9th inning and finishing with 8 2/3 strong frames, letting up 2 runs and getting the 6-2 decision over the Cubs.
R. A. Dickey did not dominate the Yankees. But he pitched well enough into the 7th to give the Blue Jays a rare “W” against them, 5-2.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (August.19th) – Updated Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings

Jarrod Parker pitched a complete game victory with no room for error. He let up just one run and walked none, but needed a 9th inning homer to get the A’s a win over Seattle, 2-1.
A.J. Pierzynski demolished the Astros, collecting a pair of RBI singles in the third inning alone. His 7th inning homer capped the scoring for Texas’ 16-5 laugher.
Nate Schierholtz homered twice and smacked an RBI double, driving in 6 runs all together, leading the Cubs to an 11-1 humiliation of the Nationals.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (August.12th) – Updated Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings

Adam Eaton singled home a run and then crushed a walk off homer in the 9th ending a wild game for the Diamondbacks over the Orioles, 7-6.
Cole Hamels tamed the best team in baseball, the Atlanta Braves, with a complete game victory. The Phillies’ left hander let up only 6 hits and one run while striking out 9, getting the decision 5-1.
Alberto Callaspo doubled home the go ahead runs in the 9th inning to break open a tense match up with the Blue Jays, giving the A’s a 5-1 win.
Yu Darvish threw a no hitter into the 8th inning, finishing with 1 hit (a solo homer), struck out 15 and walking only one as the Rangers topped the Astros, 2-1 .

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (August.9th) – Updated Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings

Josh Reddick homered three times and drove in 5 runs as the Oakland offense demolished Toronto pitching, 14-6.
David Price pitched 7 innings and letting up no earned runs. However Tampa’s bullpen betrayed him after the Dodgers rallied for 4 runs in the bottom of the 9th and shocked the Rays, 7-6.
Paul Goldschmidt hit a walk off homer, walked twice and stole a base, giving the Diamondbacks a much needed 5-4 victory over the Mets.
14 months after going through TJ surgery, Brandon Beachy dominated the Marlins throwing 8 shutout innings and extending the Braves winning streak to 14 games with the 5-0 final.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (July.29th) – Updated Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings

David Price dominated the Red Sox for the second time in less than a week. He pitched into the 8th inning, finishing with 7 1/3 innings, 2 hits, 1 run, 8 strikeouts and no walks, as the Rays leap frogged past Boston into first place, 2-1.
Yoenis Cespedes was a double shy of the cycle, driving in 3 runs, as the A’s defeated Toronto 9-4.
Francisco Liriano pitched another gem for the Pirates. He stifled the Cardinals over 7 innings, striking out 8 and letting up only 4 hits and 1 earned run. Pittsburgh’s 9-2 triumph over the Cardinals pulled the Bucs within 1/2 a game of first place.
Chris Denorfria came off the bench to club a bottom of the 9th, 2 run, walk off, come from behind homer off of Aroldis Chapman, as the Padres stunned the Reds, 2-1.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (July.21st) – Updated Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings

Mike Napoli put his thumbprint on the Red Sox – Yankees rivalry with a pair of homers including a walk off shot in the 11th inning that sent the Fenway Faithful home happy, 8-7.
Matt Kemp returned to the Dodger lineup and helped complete the sweep of the Nationals by falling a triple short of the cycle. He drove in 3 runs as LA won 9-2.
Bartolo Colon pitched a complete game 4 hit shutout, helping the A’s avoid a sweep of the Angels with a 6-0 triumph.
And in a day where each Cy Young front runner pitched well, Matt Harvey shone brightest. He pitched 7 innings of 3 hit shutout ball, striking out 10 and walking none. He got the win as the Mets topped Philadelphia, 5-0.
