Evan Longoria smacked a go ahead RBI single in the 6th and added a home run in the 8th, leading the Rays in a come from behind victory over the Yankees, 4-2.
Jon Lester dominated the Dodgers in Chavez Ravine, pitching shutout ball into the 8th. Eventually he gave way to the bullpen but finished with an impressive 7 1/3, 1 run, 3 hit performance and got the decision in the Red Sox 4-2 win.
Carlos Beltran helped slug the Cardinals back into a first place tie by collecting three hits including a tie breaking home run in the third and an RBI single in the 8th. St. Louis would beat Atlanta, 6-2
Trevor Cahill gave the Diamondbacks 4 innings of shutout ball out of the bullpen on a night where he was supposed to have the night off. Instead he entered a game critical for Arizona’s thin playoff hopes in the 15th inning and proceeded to keep the Phillies off of the board, despite having the winning run at the plate for every batter he faced in the 15th, 16th and 17th innings. Eventually Philadelphia ran out of pitchers. But Cahill was triumphant as Arizona outlasted the Phils, 12-7 in 18 innings.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (August.23rd) – Updated Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings

Adam Wainwright pitched a complete game against the Braves, surrendering just a single run and no walks while striking out 9. He also drove in a run with a sacrifice fly as the Cardinals prevailed, 3-1.
Khris Davis hit a pair of homers, driving in 4, leading the Brewers to a 6-4 victory over the Reds .
Chris Archer tamed the hot Yankee bats with 7 strong innings, allowing just 4 hits and a pair of runs, getting the 7-2 win for the Rays.
Torii Hunter homered in the first, hit an RBI double in the second and came around to score as the Tigers made short work of the Mets, 6-1.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (August.22nd) – Updated Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings

Chris Herrmann doubled home a run in the first and drove in the winning run in the 8th with another double. He finished 3-5 as the Twins beat the Tigers in Detroit, 7-6.
Jose Tabata went 3-4 with an RBI double, drove in 3 and scored a pair as the Pirates demolished the Giants, 10-5.
Jose Quintana pitched 7 strong innings, letting up only 4 hits, 1 walk and 3 runs, striking out 7. He didn’t get the decision but his strong start set up the White Sox 4-3 12th inning win against the fading Royals.
Mat Latos was wonderful over 8 innings, letting up 1 run and walking none, as the Reds snuck past the Diamondbacks, 2-1.

Shin-Soo Choo led off the game with a home run and finished with 4 hits, driving in 3 and scoring 3 as the Reds hung on to top the Diamondbacks, 10-7.
Ian Kennedy threw 7 shutout innings, giving up just 4 hits and striking out 8, leading the Padres past the Pirates, 2-1.
Jacoby Ellsbury led a Boston attack with three hits, including a double, a stolen base and a pair of runs scored, as the Red Sox won a much needed laugher in San Francisco, 12-1.
Wei-Yin Chen helped keep the struggling Orioles in playoff contention. He threw 7 strong innings, allowing only a pair of solo homers, and got the 4-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays.

Robinson Cano was remarkable in the Yankees double header sweep of Toronto. He collected 4 hits including a three run game turning homer in the 8-4 opening win. Then in the 2-1 finale, he collected two more hits including an RBI single, getting six hits all together.
John Danks pitched 8 shutout innings, scattering 7 hits and walking just one, as the White Sox topped the fading Royals, 2-0.
Neil Walker went 2-4 with a home run, helping the Pirates clobber the Padres, 8-1 and build their lead in the NL Central.
Patrick Corbin threw a complete game victory, letting up only 2 runs, striking out 10 and walking none. The Diamondbacks stopped the Reds in Cincinnati, 5-2.

Jarrod Parker pitched a complete game victory with no room for error. He let up just one run and walked none, but needed a 9th inning homer to get the A’s a win over Seattle, 2-1.
A.J. Pierzynski demolished the Astros, collecting a pair of RBI singles in the third inning alone. His 7th inning homer capped the scoring for Texas’ 16-5 laugher.
Nate Schierholtz homered twice and smacked an RBI double, driving in 6 runs all together, leading the Cubs to an 11-1 humiliation of the Nationals.
Francisco Liriano continued his marvelous season with 7 shutout innings in San Diego, striking out 13 in the process. His 4 hit performance earned him his 14th win for the Pirates, 3-1 over the Padres.

Max Scherzer improved to 18-1 by throwing 8 solid innings against division rival Kansas City. He surrenders only 5 hits, 2 runs and no walks as the Tigers prevailed 6-3.
Adam Eaton went 4-7 and broke the tie in the 16th inning with a 2 run double, setting up the Diamondbacks’ 4-2 win it Pittsburgh.
Homer Bailey mystified the Brewers over 8 innings, letting up just 1 run, 3 hits and 1 walk. He got the decision in Cincinnati’s 9-1 thrashing of Milwaukee.

John Lackey quieted the Yankees bats while pitching into the 7th inning. He let up a single run and got the 6-1 win for the Red Sox.
Martin Prado helped the Diamondbacks keep pace in the playoff hunt by collecting 4 hits including a 3 run homer and beating Pittsburgh 15-5.
Clayton Kershaw beat the Phillies in just about ever way possible. He dominated on the mound with 8 shutout 3 hit innings, striking out 8 and walking just one. With the bat, he smacked an RBI double, extending the Dodgers winning streak to 10 games, 5-0 over the Phillies.

Jake Arrieta dominated the St. Louis Cardinals, pitching 7 two hit shutout innings and getting a rare victory for the Cubs, 7-0.
Alfonso Soriano continued his torrid hitting pace by putting the Red Sox away early. He went 3-4 with a homer, a stolen base and 4 runs batted in, leading the Yankees to a 10-3 victory in Fenway.
Jonathan Lucroy went 3-5 and 3 RBI. He clocked a bottom of the ninth, 2 run, come from behind, walk off home run to stun the Reds and give Milwaukee the 7-6 win.

Matt Carpenter went 4-5, launched an RBI triple in the Cardinals go ahead rally in the 5th and scored the winning run in the 12th, giving St. Louis a critical victory over the Pirates, 6-5.
Chris Nelson made several sparkling plays in the field and hit a pair of homers. His second shot was a grand slam that broke the game open, helping the Angels top the Yankees (his former club) 8-4.
Zack Wheeler struck out 12 and walking only 1 in 6 innings against the San Diego Padres. He did not get the decision, but he set up the Mets’ 4-1 triumph.
Anibal Sanchez pitched into the 8th inning letting up only one run over 7 1/3 innings, getting the Tigers a win in an important division rival match up against the Royals, 4-1.

Paul Goldschmidt hit a bottom of the 9th game tying homer and then launched a walk off shot in the 11th, sealing the Diamondbacks’ 4-3 come from behind victory over the Orioles.
Jose Fernandez was outstanding for 7 shutout innings, walking one and letting only 3 Royals get hits. He did not get the decision, but he set up Miami’s 1-0 ten inning win.
Alfonso Soriano went 3-6 with a pair of homers and six runs batted in, electrifying a dormant Yankee offense and leading them to a 14-7 blowout of the Angels.
Ryan Dempster kept the Blue Jays at bay for 7 strong innings, letting up just 4 hits and a single run. He was taken out prematurely and the bullpen blew his lead. But the Red Sox would take the lead for good in the 11th, 4-2 .

Alberto Callaspo doubled home the go ahead runs in the 9th inning to break open a tense match up with the Blue Jays, giving the A’s a 5-1 win.
Yu Darvish threw a no hitter into the 8th inning, finishing with 1 hit (a solo homer), struck out 15 and walking only one as the Rangers topped the Astros, 2-1 .

Alex Gordon went 3-4 with a homer, double, a stolen base and drove in a pair, leading the Royals over the Red Sox, 4-3.
Mark Ellis helped complete the Dodgers sweep of the Rays by falling a triple short of the cycle. His homer, double and single drove in three runs as the Dodgers ran away 8-3.
Stephen Strasburg threw the first complete game of his career and it was a 4 hit shutout of the Phillies. He struck out 10 and walked just one, getting the 6-0 win for the Nationals.

David Price pitched 7 innings and letting up no earned runs. However Tampa’s bullpen betrayed him after the Dodgers rallied for 4 runs in the bottom of the 9th and shocked the Rays, 7-6.

Martin Prado reached base 5 times, was a triple shy of the cycle and delivered the game winning, come from behind two run single that sealed the wild Diamondbacks 9-8 victory over the Rays .
Jeremy Bonderman returned to his old club, the Tigers, and gave a clutch relief performance. He entered the 11th inning in a critical game against the division rival Indians and each pitch he threw could have won the game for Cleveland. Instead he threw 3 shutout innings and got the win as the Tigers rallied in the 14th and took the game, 6-5.
Matt Harvey threw a complete game 4 hit shutout, walking none, as the Mets beat the Rockies 5-0 .

Brandon Belt got on base 4 times with a walk and three hits, scoring twice, leading the Giants to a 4-2 victory over the Brewers.
Zack Greinke recovered from a shaky first inning to pitch into the 7th inning on the road in St. Louis, allowing only 2 runs. He drove in a run with a single and extended the Dodgers road winning streak to 15 with the 3-2 win.

A. J. Burnett went the distance, scattering 8 hits and giving up only 1 run as the Pirates topped Colorado, 5-1 and maintained a game and a half lead over St. Louis.
Mike Moustakas broke up a scoreless tie with a 5th inning homer. He would get on base three times in the Royals beat the Mets, 6-2.
David Freese went 3-4 with a homer and three runs scored, leading the Cardinals attack in their 15-2 blow out on the road in Cincinnati.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (August.3rd) – Updated Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings

Devin Mesoraco homered twice, driving in 3 runs as the Reds bounced back from a Friday blow out to beat the Cardinals, 8-3.
Francisco Liriano continued his remarkable comeback with 7 shutout 2 hit innings against the Colorado Rockies. He picked up his 12th win for the 5-2 Pittsburgh triumph.
Curtis Granderson broke up a scoreless tie with a 7th inning two run homer. The Yankees got a much needed win, 3-0, against the Padres.
Max Scherzer pitched shutout ball into the 8th, finishing with 7 2/3 innings, allowing only 3 hits. He improved to 16-1 as the Tigers topped the reeling White Sox 3-0.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (August.2nd) – Updated Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings

Cody Ross went 4-5 against the Red Sox, his former team, including a go ahead home run as the Diamondbacks held on to win in Fenway, 7-6.
Jose Fernandez snapped the Indians 8 game winning streak by throwing 8 shutout innings, striking out 14 and driving in a run himself, earning the 10-0 win for the Marlins.
A. J. Pierzynski drove in a run in the third and two more in the seventh as the Rangers won and picked up a game head to head against Oakland, 8-3.
Doug Fister threw only 88 pitches in 8 innings to make quick work of the White Sox and win the game, 2-1.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (August.1st) – Updated Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings

There were so many Red Sox heroes to count in last night’s stunning 9th inning rally against the Mariners. Daniel Nava drew a lead off walk and scored to start the rally, then launched a 1 out walk off RBI double to end the game.
Yu Darvish struck out 14 batters and walked none over seven shutout innings. He got the win as the Rangers topped the Diamondbacks, 7-1.
Justin Upton launced a pair of homers, driving in 5 as the Braves increased their Division lead and beat the Rockies, 11-2.
Matt Cain threw 8 terrific innings against the Phillies. He walked 2 and let up only 1 run and kept the Giants in the game long enough to stage a ninth inning game inning rally, 2-1.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (July.31st) – Updated Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings

Torii Hunter went 4-5 with 3 RBI and finished a triple shy of the cycle. (He was actually thrown out trying to stretch a double into a triple!) The Tigers embarrassed the Washington Nationals , 11-1 .
Paul Goldschmidt got on base four times, homered and scored three times, leading the Diamondbacks to a 7-0 win over the Rays and picked up a game on the Dodgers.
Brett Oberholtzer threw seven shutout innings in his first ever big league start to get the win, pair of homers, driving in 4 runs, as Atlanta beat Colorado , 11-3.
Clayton Kershaw was masterful over 8 shutout innings against the Yankees. He walked none and scattered five hits. He was pulled from the game, however, and New York took advantage of the Dodger bullpen for a 3-0 victory.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (July.30th) – Updated Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings

Brandon Cumpton got his first ever big league win in his fifth start. He shutout the mighty Cardinals over 7 innings, completing the double header sweep and giving the Pirates a 6-0 win and a game and a half lead on St. Louis.
Mark Buehrle tossed seven shutout innings against Oakland, walking none and surrendering only 5 hits as the Blue Jays prevailed, 5-0.
Freddie Freeman clubbed a pair of homers, driving in 4 runs, as Atlanta beat Colorado , 11-3.
Mike Trout reached base 6 times, collecting four hits and two walks. It wasn’t enough for the Angels to win, however. Their bullpen melted down and surrendered a 14-11 loss in 11 innings to Texas.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (July.29th) – Updated Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings

David Price dominated the Red Sox for the second time in less than a week. He pitched into the 8th inning, finishing with 7 1/3 innings, 2 hits, 1 run, 8 strikeouts and no walks, as the Rays leap frogged past Boston into first place, 2-1.
Yoenis Cespedes was a double shy of the cycle, driving in 3 runs, as the A’s defeated Toronto 9-4.
Francisco Liriano pitched another gem for the Pirates. He stifled the Cardinals over 7 innings, striking out 8 and letting up only 4 hits and 1 earned run. Pittsburgh’s 9-2 triumph over the Cardinals pulled the Bucs within 1/2 a game of first place.
Chris Denorfria came off the bench to club a bottom of the 9th, 2 run, walk off, come from behind homer off of Aroldis Chapman, as the Padres stunned the Reds, 2-1.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (July.28th) – Updated Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings

David Ortiz made up for a humiliating ejection on Saturday with an electrifying Sunday. He went 4-4 with a home run, two RBI and a pair of runs scored, leading the Red Sox to a 5-0 victory in Baltimore and catapulted Boston back into first place.
Ubaldo Jimenez dominated the Texas Rangers with 8 masterful shutout innings letting up only 2 hits and 3 walks. He got the 6-0 win as the Indians swept Texas.
Jason Heyward homered in the third and drove in another run in the go ahead 6th inning rally, propelling the Braves to a 5-2 victory and a three game sweep of the Cardinals.
José Fernández was brilliant through 8 innings. He let just 5 hits, walked none and struck out 13 Pirates and picking up a rare win for the Marlins, 3-2.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (July.27th) – Updated Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings

Chris Archer pitched a complete game 2 hit shutout in the Bronx as the first place Rays held off the Yankees by the slimmest of margins, 1-0.
Stephen Drew went 3-5 with a pair of home runs, including a bizarre reviewed homer. He drove in 5 of the Red Sox 7 runs as Boston topped Baltimor 7-3.
Hyun-jin Ryu threw 7 innings of 2 hit ball against the Reds, giving the Dodgers another hard fought victory, 4-1.
Andrelton Simmons 2 out 2 run double in the bottom of the 8th broke up a scoreless tie between playoff contenders. It was all the offense the Braves would get to beat the Cardinals in a 2-0 thriller.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (July.26th) – Updated Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings

Adam Jones homered twice, driving in three runs, getting Baltimore back on track and knocking the Red Sox out of first with a 6-0 victory.
Felix Hernandez pitched a 9 inning, 1 run, 5 hit, no walk and 11 strikeout masterpiece. Sadly for him, Seattle’s bats were dead and he got a no decision in the 13 inning 3-2 Twins victory over the Mariners.
Daniel Murphy went 4-5 with 2 homers and 5 RBI in the Mets 11-0 rout of the Nationals for the first game of a double header. In the second game, a 2-1 Washington win, he went 2-4. In all, he got 6 hits in 9 at bats for the day.
Clayton Kershaw pitched brilliantly in a tense battle of potential playoff teams. He went 8 innings, letting up 6 hits and 1 run, striking out 8 and walking no Reds batters as the Dodgers won with no margin for error, 2-1.
