J. J. Hardy turned the Yankees/Orioles game around with one swing of his bat. A 3-1 Yankee lead turned into a 4-3 Baltimore advantage. It sparked the 7 run outburst as the Birds won in the Bronx, 7-3.
Zack Greinke threw 7 solid innings, letting up 2 hits, 1 run and striking out 7 Padres. He earned his 14th win for the Dodgers, 2-1.
Hunter Pence homered, doubled and singled, knocked in a pair and scored three times as the Giants topped the Diamondbacks, 8-2.

Brandon Phillips answered his critics by being a single short of the cycle. He finished going 3-5 with 3 runs scored and 2 batted in, leading the Reds in their 8-3 win over the Rockies.

Francisco Liriano shut down the mighty Cardinals lineup with 8 innings of no run, 2 hit ball. He got his 15th win, 5-0, and the Pirates moved into a first place tie with St. Louis.
Todd Helton hit a pair of three run homers, the second one being career hit number 2,499. His 6 RBI were the difference in Colorado’s 9-6 victory over the Reds.
Jarrod Parker held the Rays to a single run over his first 7 innings of work. Eventually he left in the 8th and the bullpen lost the lead, but his performance helped set up Oakland’s 4-3 victory and moved them into the top Wild Card spot.
Dustin Ackley went 4-5 with a triple and 4 RBI, leading the Mariners past the Astros, 7-1.

Torii Hunter launched a 2 out, 3 run, come from behind, walk off homer that salvaged a game for the Tigers and avoided an Oakland sweep, 7-6.

Allan Craig was a triple shy of the cycle and hit a 2 out come from behind 7th inning grand slam to put St. Louis ahead of Cincinnati in a crucial divisional victory, 8-6.
Zack Greinke put the Dodgers back in the win column by pitching shutout ball into the 9th inning and finishing with 8 2/3 strong frames, letting up 2 runs and getting the 6-2 decision over the Cubs.
R. A. Dickey did not dominate the Yankees. But he pitched well enough into the 7th to give the Blue Jays a rare “W” against them, 5-2.

Evan Longoria smacked a go ahead RBI single in the 6th and added a home run in the 8th, leading the Rays in a come from behind victory over the Yankees, 4-2.
Jon Lester dominated the Dodgers in Chavez Ravine, pitching shutout ball into the 8th. Eventually he gave way to the bullpen but finished with an impressive 7 1/3, 1 run, 3 hit performance and got the decision in the Red Sox 4-2 win.
Carlos Beltran helped slug the Cardinals back into a first place tie by collecting three hits including a tie breaking home run in the third and an RBI single in the 8th. St. Louis would beat Atlanta, 6-2
Trevor Cahill gave the Diamondbacks 4 innings of shutout ball out of the bullpen on a night where he was supposed to have the night off. Instead he entered a game critical for Arizona’s thin playoff hopes in the 15th inning and proceeded to keep the Phillies off of the board, despite having the winning run at the plate for every batter he faced in the 15th, 16th and 17th innings. Eventually Philadelphia ran out of pitchers. But Cahill was triumphant as Arizona outlasted the Phils, 12-7 in 18 innings.

Chris Herrmann doubled home a run in the first and drove in the winning run in the 8th with another double. He finished 3-5 as the Twins beat the Tigers in Detroit, 7-6.
Jose Tabata went 3-4 with an RBI double, drove in 3 and scored a pair as the Pirates demolished the Giants, 10-5.
Jose Quintana pitched 7 strong innings, letting up only 4 hits, 1 walk and 3 runs, striking out 7. He didn’t get the decision but his strong start set up the White Sox 4-3 12th inning win against the fading Royals.
Mat Latos was wonderful over 8 innings, letting up 1 run and walking none, as the Reds snuck past the Diamondbacks, 2-1.

Nate Schierholtz homered twice and smacked an RBI double, driving in 6 runs all together, leading the Cubs to an 11-1 humiliation of the Nationals.
Francisco Liriano continued his marvelous season with 7 shutout innings in San Diego, striking out 13 in the process. His 4 hit performance earned him his 14th win for the Pirates, 3-1 over the Padres.

Homer Bailey mystified the Brewers over 8 innings, letting up just 1 run, 3 hits and 1 walk. He got the decision in Cincinnati’s 9-1 thrashing of Milwaukee.

Clayton Kershaw beat the Phillies in just about ever way possible. He dominated on the mound with 8 shutout 3 hit innings, striking out 8 and walking just one. With the bat, he smacked an RBI double, extending the Dodgers winning streak to 10 games, 5-0 over the Phillies.

Alfonso Soriano went 3-6 with a pair of homers and six runs batted in, electrifying a dormant Yankee offense and leading them to a 14-7 blowout of the Angels.
Ryan Dempster kept the Blue Jays at bay for 7 strong innings, letting up just 4 hits and a single run. He was taken out prematurely and the bullpen blew his lead. But the Red Sox would take the lead for good in the 11th, 4-2 .

Jacoby Ellsbury doubled home a run in the 4th and in the 6th, going 4-5 and leading the Red Sox to a 5-3 victory in Kansas City.
Wilmer Flores went 2-4 with RBI singles in the 4th and the 8th, providing almost all the Mets offense over the Diamondbacks, 4-1.
Nathan Eovaldi helped the Marlins stop the Braves winning streak at 14 games. He may not have got the decision, but his 7 shutout innings, letting up one hit and striking out 8, setting up Miami’s 1-0 win.

David Price pitched 7 innings and letting up no earned runs. However Tampa’s bullpen betrayed him after the Dodgers rallied for 4 runs in the bottom of the 9th and shocked the Rays, 7-6.
Paul Goldschmidt hit a walk off homer, walked twice and stole a base, giving the Diamondbacks a much needed 5-4 victory over the Mets.
14 months after going through TJ surgery, Brandon Beachy dominated the Marlins throwing 8 shutout innings and extending the Braves winning streak to 14 games with the 5-0 final.

Neil Walker got on base 4 times with a pair of RBI and helped the Pirates erase an early 4 run hole before topping Miami 5-4 in 10 innings.
Victor Martinez haunted his old team with a RBI hits in the 3rd and 4th innings and helped the Tigers complete the four game sweep of the Indians, 10-3.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (August.7th) – Updated Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings

Stephen Drew went 2-4 with a walk and a come from behind 3 run homer in the 9th inning to lead the Red Sox to a 7-5 win in Houston.
Martin Prado reached base 5 times, was a triple shy of the cycle and delivered the game winning, come from behind two run single that sealed the wild Diamondbacks 9-8 victory over the Rays .
Jeremy Bonderman returned to his old club, the Tigers, and gave a clutch relief performance. He entered the 11th inning in a critical game against the division rival Indians and each pitch he threw could have won the game for Cleveland. Instead he threw 3 shutout innings and got the win as the Tigers rallied in the 14th and took the game, 6-5.
Matt Harvey threw a complete game 4 hit shutout, walking none, as the Mets beat the Rockies 5-0 .

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (August.6th) – Updated Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings

Andrew Albers had a remarkable big league debut. The Twins left hander pitched shutout ball into the 9th inning. He finished with 8 1/3 innings, no runs, 4 hits and only one walk, topping the Kansas City Royals, 7-0.
Adam Jones went 4-4 with a homer and a stolen base. He drove in runs in the first and fourth and scored in the 8th as the Orioles beat the Padres, 4-1 at PetcoPark.
Matt Latos kept the Oakland A’s off the board during his 7 1/3 shutout innings, letting up only 4 hits. He got the win for the Reds, 3-1.
Eric Chavez hit a game tying RBI double and then added another run scoring double to extend the lead as Arizona topped Tampa Bay, 6-1.

Jeremy Guthrie threw a complete game shutout, holding the Twins to 4 hits as the Royals crushed Minnesota, 13-0.
Brandon Belt got on base 4 times with a walk and three hits, scoring twice, leading the Giants to a 4-2 victory over the Brewers.
Zack Greinke recovered from a shaky first inning to pitch into the 7th inning on the road in St. Louis, allowing only 2 runs. He drove in a run with a single and extended the Dodgers road winning streak to 15 with the 3-2 win.

David Freese went 3-4 with a homer and three runs scored, leading the Cardinals attack in their 15-2 blow out on the road in Cincinnati.

Curtis Granderson broke up a scoreless tie with a 7th inning two run homer. The Yankees got a much needed win, 3-0, against the Padres.
Max Scherzer pitched shutout ball into the 8th, finishing with 7 2/3 innings, allowing only 3 hits. He improved to 16-1 as the Tigers topped the reeling White Sox 3-0.
