Sully Baseball Daily Podcast – February 2, 2014
It is The Sunday Request on The Sully Baseball Daily Podcast.
Why is it that post-season success & championships are much greater factors when evaluating NFL players vs MLB players?
— High Heat Stats (@HighHeatStats) February 2, 2014
It is harder to use stats to evaluate the worth of an NFL player compared to a baseball player. Perhaps “counting the rings” is more relevant for that reason.

Today’s episode of The Sully Baseball Daily Podcast was recorded at San Jose Minetta Airport. Always an ideal place for podcast sound.
I bought the Sporting News Baseball Preview and came to the conclusion that the White Sox might have a trick or two up their sleeves.

In 2019, Michael Young will be eligible for the Hall of Fame.
He will have detractors and supporters as his candidacy falls somewhere in “on the bubble” territory.
The debate will be endless, like the Jack Morris back and forth. But that will be a welcome distraction from the never ending Steroid controversy in Cooperstown.
That and more on today’s episode of The Sully Baseball Daily Podcast.

David Ortiz wants an extension with the Boston Red Sox?
That’s nice, but he has clearly mistaken the Red Sox with a sentimental team.
That’s the topic for today’s episode of The Sully Baseball Daily Podcast.

On today’s episode of The Sully Baseball Daily Podcast I pay tribute to Bill White on his birthday.
A great player, broadcaster and executive, Mr. White is living about as complete a baseball life as anyone could hope for.

This poster of the Pittsburgh Crawfords’ great team made me think about how far we have come in the integration of baseball. And yet there are still some barriers that need to be broken.
We’ve seen today’s answer to Oscar Charleston and Josh Gibson make the majors.
What about today’s Jackie Mitchell?
Who? That answer and more and more on today’s episode of The Sully Baseball Daily Podcast.

It is The Sunday Request on The Sully Baseball Daily Podcast.
@sullybaseball Is it ok to root for a team to fail?
— Dave Keener (@DaveKeeners) January 24, 2014
It may seem counter productive and sacrilegious, but sometimes wanting your club to fall on its face isn’t such a bad thing. But the circumstances have to be right.

Today’s episode of The Sully Baseball Daily Podcast is a bit of a grab bag.
I talk a little about Taijuan Walker, James Paxton and a strange way I propose the Mariners should use them.
And I quote haiku master Masaoka Shiki… like you do.

Greg Maddux… people will remember you as a Brave… not a Cub.
Maybe that’s why I picked a picture of you pitching as a Dodger for the website.
Writers… a unanimous Hall of Fame vote is NOT a vote for best player of all time.
That and a few other things have my goat on today’s episode of The Sully Baseball Daily Podcast.

They are naming the new award for baseball leadership after Bud Selig?
Why not also name the relief pitcher award for Armando Benitez?
Am I on Earth?
I try to figure that out on today’s episode of The Sully Baseball Daily Podcast.

Today on The Sully Baseball Daily Podcast, I discuss bias and impartiality.
@sullybaseball no thanks. Plenty of other stuff to do with my day than to listen to some biased nobodies talk shit about the angels.
— Michael Reed (@mikeareed34) January 8, 2014
Being called biased kind of hurt. I will never be impartial, but my impartiality will be tempered by a lack of bias.
Does that make sense?
I hope so.

On Dr. King’s day, I discuss segregation in baseball and why that was worse than any PED scandal.
Plus a Sully Baseball Daily Podcast salute to Oscar Charleston.
If you hear that name and ask “Who?”, then that is truly the tragedy of a segregated game.

It is time for THE SUNDAY REQUEST on The Sully Baseball Daily Podcast.
@sullybaseball The money is fine but would you give 7 years to a pitcher?
— Bob Buscaglia (@BobBuscaglia) January 16, 2014
Usually I would NEVER give a seven year contract to a pitcher, but Clayton Kershaw is not your usual pitcher.
I think the contract is justified. Listen in to find out why.

Rewatching Game 4 of the 1989 World Series made me realize how influential Tony LaRussa was.
Whether it was the bullpen, the steroid era or waiver wire deals, LaRussa’s paths can be felt to this very day.
Sounds like a topic for The Sully Baseball Daily Podcast to me!

Big league baseball is going to be expanding use of instant replay.
It will take no reviewing from me to see that this is a terrific things for baseball. Will it fix EVERYTHING all at once?
Of course not. But it is progress.
All that and more on today’s episode of The Sully Baseball Daily Podcast.
Here is the video that my wife and I made a few years ago on the subject.

The Oscar nominations came out and another obsession of mine is touched upon during The Sully Baseball Daily Podcast.

Also a comparing and contrasting A-Rod and LeBron

Today on The Sully Baseball Daily Podcast, I examine an intriguing “What If?” scenario.
50 years ago, the Kansas City A’s almost became the Louisville Athletics (or Kentucky Colonels.)
If the A’s developed in their new home with the same players who blossomed in the 1970’s, how would baseball have been different?

Today on The Sully Baseball Daily Podcast, I give thanks to Jose Canseco.
No really, I do.
If he didn’t write that book and expose the steroid era, we could have a bigger Hall of Fame fiasco than we do now.
Sick of the talk about not voting in juicers?
Imagine the cry to kick them out after they were voted in!

So much negativity regarding yesterday’s ballot.
THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE A HAPPY OCCASION!
Today on the Sully Baseball Daily Podcast, I continue to talk about the Hall of Fame, blame the writers for the back log and wonder what exactly Dan LeBatard did that was so wrong.

His was a life worth celebrating.

My dear friend Ritch Duncan (who you can follow on Twitter HERE) pointed out that every New York sports team kind of stinks now.
Whichever New York sports team rebuilds and puts together a fun, young, hungry elite team will capture the heart of the city for a new generation of sports fans.
That team will help end the deep freeze of New York sports.
That is the topic for today’s episode of The Sully Baseball Daily Podcast.

@sullybaseball Sunday request; I want to hear you opinion about what team has the worst management.
— Ermling (@antonermling) December 23, 2013
With such an open ended question, I gave a complex open ended answer but ultimately came up with a single team.

With Masahiro Tanaka posting soon, there will be a feeding frenzy for the services of a pitcher who has yet to pitch in the majors.
The Yankees, Mariners and Cubs will be desperate for him.
The Rangers and Dodgers would probably be the best landing spot for him.
