The Mets Are Rolling, But Where Have We Seen This Act Before
Posted by Jonathan Hacohen

The Mets are off to a fast start – with Matt Harvey, Bartolo Colon and Jon Niese going a combined 10 – 0 so far in their starts. Add in a great start for Jacob deGrom, and this club has the bet record in the MLB. The news is not all good though, with injuries to David Wright. Travis d’Arnaud and many key pitchers, it is only a matter of time before their depth is tested. It should be the brass’s job to add more depth to this club via trade, but that wont be the case. The Mets also play stiffer competition in the next 2 weeks. Are they 13 – 4 good? Probably not, but if they cam go the rest of the year .500, they should nail down a playoff spot with 85 -86 wins in the NL. The squad saw their 11 game winning streak (1st time since 1990) be derailed by the crosstown Yankees last night. They seek revenge today when Harvey goes up against CC Sabathia in the Bronx.

The Mets lost their 1st game in 12 contests last night versus the Yankees. Sure, they own the best record in the Majors at 13 – 4, but are they really this good?
The answer is no. Don’t get me wrong, the club out of Flushing Meadows, NY is decisively better than they have been since moving into Citi Field. The basis of me saying they are not better is due to injury troubles.
Zack Wheeler is out for the year with Tommy John Surgery, along with Josh Edgin from the Relief Core. Add in the suspension to Jenrry Mejia, with waiting for Bobby Parnell, and the clubs pitching should be less equal than they were in 2014.
David Wright and Travis d’Arnaud are also on the DL.

David Wright cant stay on the field of play in the last few years. This does not bode well for a team that desperately needs his pedigree in the lineup if they are hoping for a playoff run. Add in a perennial injury to Micheal Cuddyer, and your resting all of your load on offense for guys like Lucas Duda and Curtis Granderson. So far his absence hasn’t hurt the squad, but it will in going forward.
There is no way Bartolo Colon can keep up this act either. Maybe I am wrong, having called for his demise for several years. but this man has reeled of a 4 – 0 record, with a 2.77 ERA.
Jacob deGrom also was pitching lights out for the campaign – until Mark Teixeira lit him up last night at Yankee Stadium.
Matt Harvey is 3 – 0, and full value for his victories. Jon Niese is also perfect, but a WHIP of 1.556 through 3 starts suggests he has been quite lucky to not have suffered a loss.
The Bullpen hasn’t blown very many games, but other than Jeurys Familia right now, no active roster pitcher has an ERA less than 3.18.
For the truth, you just need to look at the teams they have played thus far. 6 games versus the Braves (4 – 2), 3 versus the hapless Phillies (3 – 0) and the Marlins (4 – 0). The club took 2 of 3 from the Nats in the 1st series, and lost their 1st game of the Subway Series last night to the Yankees.
It goes without saying that the NL East this year is not stoked with great ballclubs other than the Nationals, so New York should make some hay versus the other few teams, and that is exactly what they have done so far.
I foresee some problems upcoming in their next few series containing the Yankees, Marlins, Nationals and Orioles. They will probably retreat a little in the standings in the next few weeks.
Having said this, they could still hold their own until they get some of their players back in a few weeks.
Everyone in the division other than them is not over .500, so their quick start should keep them in contention all year long. Washington is the club they will likely battle with all season, and they are currently 6 games up on them already.
Quick starts are not foreign to the team either. The club finished April at 15 – 11 last year. The year ended for them 63 – 73 afterwards. This club is better with the whole pitching rotation. I fully expect them to finish in the 80’s somewhere in victory, and will probably take home a Wild Card spot, however leading the whole MLB in wins will not be on the card.

Other than a few guys with limited innings, no one else besides Familia has an ERA under 3 in the relief core. The 25 Year Old Dominican has converted all 8 Save opportunities, and has only yielded 7 baserunners in 9.2 IP thus far in 2015
To have the year start this quick is nice for them. I just think the injuries they have suffered will catch up to them in the near future. I wouldn’t count on David Wright or Michael Cuddyer or the full year either. The team needs its full compliment of roster players to maintain this. 10 guys on the shelf right now is not a great start in the health department.
Numbers can be deceiving. The Mets quick start should give the brass some guts to start wheeling and dealing in the upcoming months, however they will probably not do anything at all considering their recent history. It is too bad to, because the club has a legitimate shot to win a playoff spot.

For a guy who only started 38 games from the 2006 – 2010 years, his fast start of 4 – 0 this year, coupled with his 37 – 19 in his last 56 decisions is nothing less than a miracle career comeback. But can he keep this up? Somewhere down the line, father time has to catch up with this man. . For now he is taking a ton of pressure off the rest of the Starting Staff, that are all under the age of 30 other than him.
