James Shields lived up to his “Big Game” nickname by throwing 7 shutout innings against first place Detroit and completing a doubleheader sweep for the Royals, 3-0.
Jake Arrieta dominated the St. Louis Cardinals, pitching 7 two hit shutout innings and getting a rare victory for the Cubs, 7-0.
Alfonso Soriano continued his torrid hitting pace by putting the Red Sox away early. He went 3-4 with a homer, a stolen base and 4 runs batted in, leading the Yankees to a 10-3 victory in Fenway.
Jonathan Lucroy went 3-5 and 3 RBI. He clocked a bottom of the ninth, 2 run, come from behind, walk off home run to stun the Reds and give Milwaukee the 7-6 win.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (August.15th) – Updated Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings

Matt Carpenter went 4-5, launched an RBI triple in the Cardinals go ahead rally in the 5th and scored the winning run in the 12th, giving St. Louis a critical victory over the Pirates, 6-5.
Chris Nelson made several sparkling plays in the field and hit a pair of homers. His second shot was a grand slam that broke the game open, helping the Angels top the Yankees (his former club) 8-4.
Zack Wheeler struck out 12 and walking only 1 in 6 innings against the San Diego Padres. He did not get the decision, but he set up the Mets’ 4-1 triumph.
Anibal Sanchez pitched into the 8th inning letting up only one run over 7 1/3 innings, getting the Tigers a win in an important division rival match up against the Royals, 4-1.

Aaron Hill singled home the tying run in the 9th and the winning run in the 14th inning, completing the the Diamondbacks’ sweep of the Orioles, 5-4.
Francisco Liriano snapped the Pirates losing streak in a big way, defeating the Cardinals 5-1 with a complete game effort, with just 4 hits and one run.
Alfonso Soriano for the second straight night hit a pair of homers. He drove in 7 runs and doubled and walked, driving the Yankees to an 11-3 thrashing of the Angels.
Jarred Cosart pitched 6 shutout innings in Oakland, setting the Astros up for a 2-1 extra inning victory.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (August.13th) – Updated Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings

Paul Goldschmidt hit a bottom of the 9th game tying homer and then launched a walk off shot in the 11th, sealing the Diamondbacks’ 4-3 come from behind victory over the Orioles.
Jose Fernandez was outstanding for 7 shutout innings, walking one and letting only 3 Royals get hits. He did not get the decision, but he set up Miami’s 1-0 ten inning win.
Alfonso Soriano went 3-6 with a pair of homers and six runs batted in, electrifying a dormant Yankee offense and leading them to a 14-7 blowout of the Angels.
Ryan Dempster kept the Blue Jays at bay for 7 strong innings, letting up just 4 hits and a single run. He was taken out prematurely and the bullpen blew his lead. But the Red Sox would take the lead for good in the 11th, 4-2 .

Adam Eaton singled home a run and then crushed a walk off homer in the 9th ending a wild game for the Diamondbacks over the Orioles, 7-6.
Cole Hamels tamed the best team in baseball, the Atlanta Braves, with a complete game victory. The Phillies’ left hander let up only 6 hits and one run while striking out 9, getting the decision 5-1.
Alberto Callaspo doubled home the go ahead runs in the 9th inning to break open a tense match up with the Blue Jays, giving the A’s a 5-1 win.
Yu Darvish threw a no hitter into the 8th inning, finishing with 1 hit (a solo homer), struck out 15 and walking only one as the Rangers topped the Astros, 2-1 .

Jacoby Ellsbury doubled home a run in the 4th and in the 6th, going 4-5 and leading the Red Sox to a 5-3 victory in Kansas City.
Wilmer Flores went 2-4 with RBI singles in the 4th and the 8th, providing almost all the Mets offense over the Diamondbacks, 4-1.
Nathan Eovaldi helped the Marlins stop the Braves winning streak at 14 games. He may not have got the decision, but his 7 shutout innings, letting up one hit and striking out 8, setting up Miami’s 1-0 win.

David Price pitched 7 innings and letting up no earned runs. However Tampa’s bullpen betrayed him after the Dodgers rallied for 4 runs in the bottom of the 9th and shocked the Rays, 7-6.

14 months after going through TJ surgery, Brandon Beachy dominated the Marlins throwing 8 shutout innings and extending the Braves winning streak to 14 games with the 5-0 final.

Neil Walker got on base 4 times with a pair of RBI and helped the Pirates erase an early 4 run hole before topping Miami 5-4 in 10 innings.
Victor Martinez haunted his old team with a RBI hits in the 3rd and 4th innings and helped the Tigers complete the four game sweep of the Indians, 10-3.

Stephen Drew went 2-4 with a walk and a come from behind 3 run homer in the 9th inning to lead the Red Sox to a 7-5 win in Houston.
Martin Prado reached base 5 times, was a triple shy of the cycle and delivered the game winning, come from behind two run single that sealed the wild Diamondbacks 9-8 victory over the Rays .
Jeremy Bonderman returned to his old club, the Tigers, and gave a clutch relief performance. He entered the 11th inning in a critical game against the division rival Indians and each pitch he threw could have won the game for Cleveland. Instead he threw 3 shutout innings and got the win as the Tigers rallied in the 14th and took the game, 6-5.
Matt Harvey threw a complete game 4 hit shutout, walking none, as the Mets beat the Rockies 5-0 .

Andrew Albers had a remarkable big league debut. The Twins left hander pitched shutout ball into the 9th inning. He finished with 8 1/3 innings, no runs, 4 hits and only one walk, topping the Kansas City Royals, 7-0.
Adam Jones went 4-4 with a homer and a stolen base. He drove in runs in the first and fourth and scored in the 8th as the Orioles beat the Padres, 4-1 at PetcoPark.
Matt Latos kept the Oakland A’s off the board during his 7 1/3 shutout innings, letting up only 4 hits. He got the win for the Reds, 3-1.
Eric Chavez hit a game tying RBI double and then added another run scoring double to extend the lead as Arizona topped Tampa Bay, 6-1.

Jeremy Guthrie threw a complete game shutout, holding the Twins to 4 hits as the Royals crushed Minnesota, 13-0.
Brandon Belt got on base 4 times with a walk and three hits, scoring twice, leading the Giants to a 4-2 victory over the Brewers.
Zack Greinke recovered from a shaky first inning to pitch into the 7th inning on the road in St. Louis, allowing only 2 runs. He drove in a run with a single and extended the Dodgers road winning streak to 15 with the 3-2 win.

Curtis Granderson broke up a scoreless tie with a 7th inning two run homer. The Yankees got a much needed win, 3-0, against the Padres.
Max Scherzer pitched shutout ball into the 8th, finishing with 7 2/3 innings, allowing only 3 hits. He improved to 16-1 as the Tigers topped the reeling White Sox 3-0.

There were so many Red Sox heroes to count in last night’s stunning 9th inning rally against the Mariners. Daniel Nava drew a lead off walk and scored to start the rally, then launched a 1 out walk off RBI double to end the game.
Yu Darvish struck out 14 batters and walked none over seven shutout innings. He got the win as the Rangers topped the Diamondbacks, 7-1.
Justin Upton launced a pair of homers, driving in 5 as the Braves increased their Division lead and beat the Rockies, 11-2.
Matt Cain threw 8 terrific innings against the Phillies. He walked 2 and let up only 1 run and kept the Giants in the game long enough to stage a ninth inning game inning rally, 2-1.

Paul Goldschmidt got on base four times, homered and scored three times, leading the Diamondbacks to a 7-0 win over the Rays and picked up a game on the Dodgers.
Brett Oberholtzer threw seven shutout innings in his first ever big league start to get the win, pair of homers, driving in 4 runs, as Atlanta beat Colorado , 11-3.
Clayton Kershaw was masterful over 8 shutout innings against the Yankees. He walked none and scattered five hits. He was pulled from the game, however, and New York took advantage of the Dodger bullpen for a 3-0 victory.

Brandon Cumpton got his first ever big league win in his fifth start. He shutout the mighty Cardinals over 7 innings, completing the double header sweep and giving the Pirates a 6-0 win and a game and a half lead on St. Louis.
Mark Buehrle tossed seven shutout innings against Oakland, walking none and surrendering only 5 hits as the Blue Jays prevailed, 5-0.
Freddie Freeman clubbed a pair of homers, driving in 4 runs, as Atlanta beat Colorado , 11-3.
Mike Trout reached base 6 times, collecting four hits and two walks. It wasn’t enough for the Angels to win, however. Their bullpen melted down and surrendered a 14-11 loss in 11 innings to Texas.

David Price dominated the Red Sox for the second time in less than a week. He pitched into the 8th inning, finishing with 7 1/3 innings, 2 hits, 1 run, 8 strikeouts and no walks, as the Rays leap frogged past Boston into first place, 2-1.
Yoenis Cespedes was a double shy of the cycle, driving in 3 runs, as the A’s defeated Toronto 9-4.
Francisco Liriano pitched another gem for the Pirates. He stifled the Cardinals over 7 innings, striking out 8 and letting up only 4 hits and 1 earned run. Pittsburgh’s 9-2 triumph over the Cardinals pulled the Bucs within 1/2 a game of first place.
Chris Denorfria came off the bench to club a bottom of the 9th, 2 run, walk off, come from behind homer off of Aroldis Chapman, as the Padres stunned the Reds, 2-1.

David Ortiz made up for a humiliating ejection on Saturday with an electrifying Sunday. He went 4-4 with a home run, two RBI and a pair of runs scored, leading the Red Sox to a 5-0 victory in Baltimore and catapulted Boston back into first place.
Ubaldo Jimenez dominated the Texas Rangers with 8 masterful shutout innings letting up only 2 hits and 3 walks. He got the 6-0 win as the Indians swept Texas.
Jason Heyward homered in the third and drove in another run in the go ahead 6th inning rally, propelling the Braves to a 5-2 victory and a three game sweep of the Cardinals.
José Fernández was brilliant through 8 innings. He let just 5 hits, walked none and struck out 13 Pirates and picking up a rare win for the Marlins, 3-2.

Chris Archer pitched a complete game 2 hit shutout in the Bronx as the first place Rays held off the Yankees by the slimmest of margins, 1-0.
Stephen Drew went 3-5 with a pair of home runs, including a bizarre reviewed homer. He drove in 5 of the Red Sox 7 runs as Boston topped Baltimor 7-3.
Hyun-jin Ryu threw 7 innings of 2 hit ball against the Reds, giving the Dodgers another hard fought victory, 4-1.
Andrelton Simmons 2 out 2 run double in the bottom of the 8th broke up a scoreless tie between playoff contenders. It was all the offense the Braves would get to beat the Cardinals in a 2-0 thriller.

Adam Jones homered twice, driving in three runs, getting Baltimore back on track and knocking the Red Sox out of first with a 6-0 victory.
Felix Hernandez pitched a 9 inning, 1 run, 5 hit, no walk and 11 strikeout masterpiece. Sadly for him, Seattle’s bats were dead and he got a no decision in the 13 inning 3-2 Twins victory over the Mariners.
Daniel Murphy went 4-5 with 2 homers and 5 RBI in the Mets 11-0 rout of the Nationals for the first game of a double header. In the second game, a 2-1 Washington win, he went 2-4. In all, he got 6 hits in 9 at bats for the day.
Clayton Kershaw pitched brilliantly in a tense battle of potential playoff teams. He went 8 innings, letting up 6 hits and 1 run, striking out 8 and walking no Reds batters as the Dodgers won with no margin for error, 2-1.

Bryce Harper erased a Nats losing streak and a 9th inning meltdown with his first career walk off homer. He went 3-5 for the day as Washington snuck past Pittsburgh, 9-7.
Mat Latos won a game between hot playoff contenders. He went 7 2/3 giving up only one earned run to the Dodgers, getting the 5-2 decision for the Reds.
Billy Butler got on base 3 times, scored in the first and homered in the 7th, leading the Royals past the Orioles, 7-1.
Mark Buehrle threw a complete game , 2 hit shutout, striking out 9 Astros, as the Blue Jays prevailed 4-0.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (July.24th) – Updated Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings

Tim Hudson was pitching a shutout into the 8th inning before his ankle was broken and his career was put in jeopardy. He wound up getting career win 205 in what could be his last game, an 8-2 win over the Mets.
Nate Schierholtz went 3-6 with a homer, 5 RBI and the go ahead 12th inning double that propelled the Cubs over the Diamondbacks, 7-6.
Eric Hosmer hit a pair of homers including a 2 run game winning shot. His slugging helped set up Kansas City’s 4-3 walk off victory against Baltimore.
David Price needed only 97 pitches to throw a complete game against the Red Sox, letting up only one run and walking none. The Rays won 5-1, moving just 1/2 a game out of first place.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (July.23rd) – Updated Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings

Gerrit Cole pitched 7 innings of 2 hit, 1 run ball against the Nationals. He not only got credited for the 5-1 Pirates win, but went 2-3 with an RBI for good measure.
Adrian Gonzalez went 2-4 including a go ahead 3 run homer in the 8th inning that capped a wild Dodger comeback victory against the Blue Jays, 10-9.
Eduardo Nunez collected a pair of hits including a one out RBI triple in the 9th off of Rangers closer Joe Nathan. That tied the game and would later score the go ahead run as the Yankees stunned Texas, 5-4.
Jarred Cosart threw 7 terrific innings, letting up only one earned run. He did not get the win, but his fine outing put the Astros in a position to come from behind and beat Oakland 5-4.

Andrew McCutchen homered in the first and in the third, driving in 4 of the Pirates 6 runs as they snuck past reeling Washington, 6-5.
Dillon Gee held the division leading Braves hitless into the 7th inning and pitched 2 hit shutout ball over 7. The bullpen betrayed him as he got a no decision in the Mets 2-1 loss.
J. J. Hardy went 3-5 with a homer, 3 RBI and a pair of runs scored as the Orioles clobbered Kansas City, 9-2.
Matt Moore pitched a complete game 2 hit shutout in Fenway Park to pull Tampa Bay within 1/2 a game of Boston, 3-0.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (July.21st) – Updated Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings

Mike Napoli put his thumbprint on the Red Sox – Yankees rivalry with a pair of homers including a walk off shot in the 11th inning that sent the Fenway Faithful home happy, 8-7.
Matt Kemp returned to the Dodger lineup and helped complete the sweep of the Nationals by falling a triple short of the cycle. He drove in 3 runs as LA won 9-2.
Bartolo Colon pitched a complete game 4 hit shutout, helping the A’s avoid a sweep of the Angels with a 6-0 triumph.
And in a day where each Cy Young front runner pitched well, Matt Harvey shone brightest. He pitched 7 innings of 3 hit shutout ball, striking out 10 and walking none. He got the win as the Mets topped Philadelphia, 5-0.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (July20th) – Updated Yearly “WOB” Standings
Hanley Ramirez went 3-5 including an RBI double in the 10th that gave the Dodgers the lead for good, topping the Nationals 3-1.
C. J. Wilson pitched shutout ball into the 9th inning, finishing with 8 1/3 innings, no runs and 8 strikeouts as the Angels defeated the A’s, 2-0.
One day after being benched for not hustling, Alex Rios went 3-5 with 5 RBI including a grand slam off of Paul Maholm, leading the White Sox to a 10-6 victory over the Atlanta Braves.
Gio Gonzalez struck out 11 in 6 shutout innings against the Dodgers. He was lifted for a pinch hitter in what was a scoreless tie and did not get the decision in Washington’s 3-1 loss to L.A.

Brandon Barnes went 5-5 and hit for the cycle in a losing cause. The Astros lost 10-7 to Seattle but Barnes had the offensive performance of the night.
Domonic Brown went 3-5 with a homer helping the Phillies offensive uprising on the road against the Mets, 13-8.
Ervin Santana shut down the first place Tigers over 7 1/3 innings giving the Royals a much needed 1-0 victory.
And Chad Gaudin helped the Giants creep a game closer to the first place Arizona Diamondbacks by pitching 7 shutout innings in San Francisco’s 2-0 victory.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (July16th) – Updated Yearly “WOB” Standings

It is an ALL STAR GAME edition of Who Owned Baseball!
MVP Mariano Rivera pitched a perfect inning and had the entire stage to himself, giving the All Star Game its lasting memory for the night.
Prince Fielder legged out a triple in the 9th inning that delighted the crowd and probably gave his manager a heart attack.
Matt Harvey started the game and let the first two runners on. Then he bore down and retired the next 6 All Stars he faced.
And Paul Goldschmidt hit the National League’s lone extra base hit that gave the senior circuit some life in the 9th inning.
They all owned the All Star Game last night.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (July15th) – Updated Yearly “WOB” Standings

Initially I wasn’t going to do a Who Owned Baseball for the Home Run Derby. But the post derby buzz made me change my mind. It’s my stat, I can do what I want with it.
Yoenis Cespedes put on a remarkable show at CitiField, smashing 32 homers in all. The final shot was a massive blast into centerfield with an even cooler bat flip. (A Home Run Derby is no time for humility!) So he will get a full point added to his WOB total.
Meanwhile Bryce Harper came up just short. But he put on a great show as well and had the added bonus of having his dad pitch to him.
Harper did not own baseball. Last night it was Cespedes’ night. But his performance will give him a 1/2 WOB.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (July14th) – Updated Yearly “WOB” Standings

Justin Verlander made a serious bid for his 3rd career no hitter. He held the Rangers hitless for the first 6 2/3 innings before Mitch Moreland doubled off of the wall. He finished with 7 innings of one hit ball, getting credit for the Tigers 5-0 victory.
Wily Peralta pitched 7 strong innings, letting up only 1 run, as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Arizona Diamondbacks by a 5-1 score.
Josh Donaldson certainly hit like an All Star yesterday. He drove in all three Oakland runs including a 2 run game tying home run in the 7th and a walk off single in the 11th as the A’s topped Boston 3-2.
Michael Cuddyer went 2-5 with a homer and drove in all three Rockies runs in Colorado’s 3-1 victory over the Dodgers.
