Toronto Blue Jays Payroll In 2016 + Contracts Going Forward

The Blue Jays are at the unique crossroads where they have grown massively in attendance - but are exponentially growing in cost of payroll each year. Based on some great front office decisions on Bautista, Encarnacion and Donaldson - the club as their best chance to in a championship is right now. Push all of your chips in, sign some more players - and take on salary. You may just lead the American League in attendance if you do (just like in the early 90's). The Jays have talked about cutting payroll in 2016. That would be a grave mistake. Right now they are at about $130 MIL in total team salary for next season.

The Blue Jays have $94 MIL in guaranteed contracts already in commitments for Troy Tulowitzki, Russell Martin, Jose Bautista, Marco Estrada, R.A. Dickey J.A. Happ and Edwin Encarnacion.

The club also will have about another $35 – $38 MIL in Arbitration dealing with another 10 players.

This would mean the team is hovering around the $130 MIL already before they pull the trigger on any moves this offseason.

We made it abundantly clear in our Toronto Blue Jays State Of The Union that this is no time to slow down in going for a championship.

One of the biggest things we mentioned there was the lack of an ace in the AL East.  For Toronto to win the Division they may not need a #1 guy again.  They will only need another #1 guy in the postseason. Read the rest of this entry

The Oakland A’s State Of The Union For 2016: Beane Counting Or Picking?

Billy Beane saw his A's have their worst record in 18 years in 2015. It was a rebuilding that included him trading away the AL MVP caliber player in Josh Donaldson for a list of 4 players. It will take a couple of seasons to see how bad this may have been. After that deal, it was business as usual, with the man acquiring 4 decent Starting Pitching prospects for players on the last year of their contract. The team doesn't have any real money committed, and their is a ton of flexibility.

It used to be that Billy Beane would wait until a player was about to hit Free Agency until he would trade that player for the next round of guys.  Now he doesn’t even like his ALL – Stars to hit higher levels of Arbitration.

After last years all in effort to make a run at the postseason, Beane started the dismantle process of his squad.  Perhaps the most controversial move was to flip Josh Donaldson for a package of four players.

A lot of people are still upset about that deal considering Donaldson is going to be a perennial MVP candidate, however he was that already for the A’s, and it failed to result in a placement beyond the 1st round. Read the rest of this entry

The Kansas City Royals State Of The Union Part 2: Lineup Depth And Versatility

Mike Moustakas was a high school shortstop and was named California High School Player of the Year in both his Sophmore and Junior seasons. His teammate and left side of the infield counterpart is fellow big leaguer, and first round draft pick Matt Dominguez. He also launched 52 career home runs in high school, a California record, but then again, I launched a home run at Chatsworth, and I was a skinny pitcher who typically wasn’t allowed to hit, so take that record as you will.

The Tampa Bay Rays do it by getting career years out of castoffs like James Loney.  The Oakland A’s do it with a platoon at nearly every position.

Now the Kansas City Royals will try to be the latest small market club to make a run at the playoffs with an unorthodox roster strategy, of utility and multi-positional players.

Given their roster today, the only player in any likely starting lineup the Royals will throw out there this season that has not played multiple positions in the major leagues is Mike Moustakas.

But even Moustakas has a past that includes him playing other positions.

When at Chatsworth High School, he played shortstop because current Houston Astros third baseman, Matt Dominguez, played third base on that same high school team.
