Why Its Time To Allow Marijuana In baseball

The Green Revolution has become a hot button topic recently constantly becoming one of the most recommended issues people have wanted national politicians including potential presidential nominees to talk about.

The issue is about to get really get on the hot stove as it could potentially be on the ballot in a dozen states and potentially pass in a couple of state legislators. Off those states include baseball hotbeds Arizona, Florida and California which not only all have major league teams but minor league affiliates as well.

As it currently stands players on a 40 man roster dont face penalties more than fines for smoking weed but players in the minor leagues (and for now D1 Colleges) face extreme penalties starting at 50 games.

Below is a quote I took from a Yahoo Sports article:

“Most stories about weed and baseball are rather funny.”

I saw a ton of MLB games live last year. 224 to be exact. I spent a lot of time listening to music at the park before and after the game.

I was also fed a steady dose of ‘Uptown Funk’ by Bruno Mars, ‘Shake It Off’ by Taylor Swift, and if I hear “Shut up and Dance with me” one more time by Walk the Moon, I am just going to snap.

Baltimore played the best music at the yard hands down. They were huge into Silento’s Whip, Nae-Nae, but also one can’t not love the “Thank God I’m a country boy” (which I have seen played numerous times at Kauffman Stadium as well.”

During several games at Camden Yards they also played “(Apache – Jump On it”) by Sugarhill Gang, and this little number is played every where.

I started to think of the most common played tunes at the park.

Rob Base’s and EZ Rock’s “It Takes Two” is routinely played at baseball venue’s after a doubleplay. Michael Jackson’s “Wanna be Starting Something” seems to find its way onto the audio deck when a rally is started. Read the rest of this entry →

Bob Feller has got to be the one Cleveland Indians player who I most wish I could have seen live. But alas, I was born in the wrong time.

I can’t even say I’ve had the pleasure of meeting him. but I have read a multitude of stories about our beloved Rapid Robert, and I know what an icon the man is, not only to the Indians franchise, but also to baseball as a whole.

therefore I, 216clevelandgirl, am going to plead with you–yes you, the person reading this right now–and ask you to please sign a petition that the Cleveland Indians started to award Bob Feller the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Feller willingly put his baseball career on hold after the bombing of Pearl Harbor and became the first professional baseball player to join the U.S. Navy during World War II.

His bravery and courage earned him the rank of Chief Petty Officer. After Feller returned, he refused to be recognized as a hero, stating, “I’m no hero. heroes don’t come back.”

Since the Angels are not eating at the ‘big boy table’ anymore the recent defection of Yulieski Gurriel and his brother Lourdes Jr. may have just provided a decent alternative.

With spring training around the corner, I wanted to take a look at a couple of young players for each team that I think will have a larger impact in 2016. We’ll start with the American League and move to the National at the end of the week.

Baltimore Orioles

Manny Machado, SS – How does a guy who collected 102 runs, 181 hits, 30 doubles, 35 homers, and 86 RBI make more of an impact? Simple, the kid is currently just 23 and I think he’ll continue having better plate discipline where he can build on his career .281 batting average (.286 in 2016).

This is based on a jump in walk ratio as he went from a career high 5.7% in 2014 to 9.3% in 2015. Some sites are predicting a large drop in power, however again,

I think because of age, he’s just developing his gap power as there was a huge boost to in his career percentage (9%) of extra base hits in 2016 (9.3%), yet the home runs jumped from a career high of 14 in 2013 to 35 last season.

Carlos Correa was the 1st overall pick in the 2012 Amateur Draft for the Houston Astros. He came up in early June and proceeded to win the American League Rookie Of The Year Award with a 3 Slash of .279/.345/.512 with 22 HRs (led all shortstops in the MLB) and 22 Doubles in just 99 Games. Who will be the Rookie Of The Year in the AL for 2016?

The 1919 Chicago White Sox (aka Black Sox) are perhaps the most tragic of all teams in baseball history.

A powerful squad, they lost that year’s World Series to the Cincinnati Reds despite being heavily favored, and were later had eight of their players banished from the sport for their involvement or knowledge of a plot to intentionally throw the Series.

One of those eight was third baseman Buck Weaver, who maintained his innocence until his death, yet was never reinstated. Unfortunately, he was sometimes his own worst enemy when it came to pleading his case.

The Next ‘Core Four’ For The New York Yankees?

Mariano Rivera. Derek Jeter.Andy Pettitte . Jorge Posada. These are the four members of the Yankees’ legendary Core Four.

The four members played several years together and all made their MLB debut in 1995.

They won five World Series championships together. Pettite was the first to retire in 2010. Posada retired a year later in 2011. Andy Pettitte came out of retirement and played for two more years before retiring alongside

Mariano Rivera in 2013. The Captain, Derek Jeter, followed suit in 2014, leaving the Yankees with no members of their legendary Core Four.

Since then, the Yankees have been saving money in free agency and instead opting to build their farm system.

And now it’s time for a new Yankees generation of the Core Four: 1B Greg Bird, SP Luis Severino, OF Aaron Judge, and SS Jorge Mateo.

I’d like to look at family duos in the present and in history. We’re talking about brothers, father and son, maybe cousins. There might even be some trios on the list, so let’s take a look:

Cecil Fielder and Prince Fielder: The elder Fielder was known for his time with the Tigers and was a 3x All-Star and 2x Silver Slugger.

The younger Fielder also spent a couple years with the Tigers, and he currently plays for the Texas Rangers. Prince is a 6x All-Star and a 3x Silver Slugger.

No baseball fan truly likes winter, but it’s a necessary evil. It allows MLB players to rest their tired and sore bodies while front office executives make roster moves to load up for another try at making the postseason.

The 2015-16 offseason has appeared to be more slow moving than in recent memory, and although guys like Ian Desmond, Yovani Gallardo, Dexter Fowler (among others) continue looking for new homes, teams have committed over $2 billion to free agents. So, the purse strings aren’t exactly being pinched.

Spring Training is now under two weeks away, but that’s still plenty of time to critique the moves made during the Hot Stove season. Let’s take a look at five free-agent signings and trades that have brought more questions than answers before Opening Day.

With a 40-man roster that’s already garnering wide praise for its projected ability to win games in 2016, the Boston Red Sox are sitting pretty heading into the upcoming spring training.

That being said, even though they roll deep there’s never a way to know how they might be impacted by injury or ineffectiveness.

Non-roster invitees typically generate little fanfare, but in some cases can end up becoming major contributors.

The Red Sox are no exception, and have some players worth watching on their own list this year.

Howie Kendrick signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers this past week, and the club has learned that Yasiel Puig has dropped 15 LBS in the offseason.

While I still peg the Dodgers for about 90 – 91 wins as of right now, they have the best odds on the board this week.

There is no doubt the San Francisco Giants lineup 1 – 8 is way better and Pitching Staff is also more rounded, however the gap between the two clubs is not a difference of +600.

I would put the Giants about 93 – 94 wins. Their roster moves while decent this winter with Johnny Cueto, Jeff Samardzija and Denard Span, they all come with a little question mark here or there. Read the rest of this entry →

There have been more famous figures in baseball than Connie Mack over the years but few are still as recognizable as the tall thin man who spent over 60 years as a major league player, manager and team owner.

A true pioneer of the game, the taciturn Hall-of-Famer had as much impact as anyone affiliated with America’s Pastime. With such a lengthy and noted career, he is a worthy subject for research and writing.

You’ll find no better work on his life than Norman L. Macht’s Connie Mack: The Grand Old Man of Baseball- In His Final Years, 1932-1956 (University of Nebraska Press).

I’ve had the opportunity to go to Spring Training almost every year for the last 10 years, so I’d love to share some suggestions to those who want to attend in 2016. Please let me know if you have any questions or suggestions!

Most of my experiences have happened in Kissimmee, Florida, which is the home of the Houston Astros Spring Training. I will try to keep my suggestions on a broad basis to help fans who want to visit many different Spring Training locations. I have never been to Arizona for Spring Training, but I hope to go in the next 2 years.

Keep in mind if you are traveling to Arizona, these suggestions could vary a little bit based on your location. Please see suggestions below:

Mere weeks remain until players for the Boston Red Sox report to spring training in Florida as the kick off to the 2016 season.

A flurry of high-profile offseason moves have the team presumably sitting in a much better space than last year, when they finished in the basement of the American League East.

However, they are far from a finished product and still have some uncertainty facing them as they prepare for another season on the diamond.
