Haley Smilow is a lucky baseball fan/writer/reporter.  Recently last summer, she was able to interview Giancarlo Stanton of the Miami Marlins.

Interviewing MLB Athletes is nothing new for our Junior Reporter.  Over the last few years, Haley has interviewed Curtis Granderson, A.J. Pierzynski, Cody Ross, Barry Enright, Justin Turner, Casey Janssen and 2013 NL MVP Andrew McCutchen.

The MLB Reports is very happy with the hard work and dedication Haley puts forth for her interviews.  She has a great future in the business!

The MLB’ers like Haley because she doesn’t ask cookie cutter questions.  She asks them to delve into their own personal lives, and for this, she is able to crack up these guys from their usual monotanous answers.

In her latest interview, Haley Smilow went toe to toe with Indians speedster Michael Bourn.

HS: Is there any other park you particularly enjoy other then Progressive?

MB: Wrigley Field has an amazing atmosphere and so much history. Just playing on a field that so many greats have played on, the ivy and all the nostalgia.

HS: What was it like playing Little League with Carl Crawford and what is like playing against him now?

MB: Little league was amazing we won the State Championship together; we were talented and competed against one another. It was good to see someone that you know from young coming up to playing in the big leagues. It kind of inspired myself to play. So now when we compete against each other we still compete against each other. He is the ultimate competitor as in myself.   We haven’t played each other this year or last year but hopefully we will get chance to soon.

HS: Do you think it was any harder playing with the Astros in front of your family and hometown friends?

Michael Bourn was a dynamic player for the Astros, and maybe they could have kept he and Pence for the rebuild - however the management was looking to scale down the payroll so Jim Crane could purchase the club.

MB: I think at first it was just something to get used to.   You know I was a little nervous at first in the situation but as time went on I knew I could play baseball I just settled back and played baseball like I knew I could.

HS: How does it feel seeing yourself on a baseball card?

MB: I never really thought about it. But it is amazing just being in the big leagues and having a baseball card. I do have my first card in a frame.

HS: Where do you think your love baseball comes?

MB: My father, he coached my teams from Little League and through junior high.

IHS: f you could go back in time who would you play baseball with?

MB: I would love to play professional ball on the same team as my dad.

HS: Who were some the greatest influences in your baseball career?

MB: My dad, he helped me become a man. I feel like a father is a big influence on a man’s life. I’m proud, because a lot of people don’t have their father growing up, and he was there every day of my life.

HS: Do you have any rituals or superstitions?

MB: I try and stay away from rituals and superstitions because you can get caught up in them. At the start of a game I usually jump across the baseline.

HS: Did you play any sports besides baseball?

MB: I played everything, football, basketball, ran track I did it all.   I think it helped me along in my baseball career because it was athletics and there are different movements in different sports.

HS: What do you like to cook?

MB: NOTHING not a single thing. Cooking is the worst!

HS: Top 5 songs on your iPod?

MB: Jay Z, Young Jeezy, Lil Wayne, 2 Chains and Scarface.

HS: What super hero would make the best baseball player and why?

MB: Superman he was just that man to me.   He could just do it all, once he put on his cape he was unstoppable.

HS: What position would he play?

MB: He probably play them all of them at once he could go get anything, but I would put him at Shortstop.

HS: What’s the best practical joke ever seen?

MB: When Eddie Perez was showing a camera crew his hotel room and points out that it has a nice closet and Tim Hudson jumps out dressed as the Grim Reaper and scares him.

HS: Have you ever been a victim of a practical joke?

MB: Of course, but I can’t really remember any. Although the dug out and locker room are filled with them.

HS: What do you do on your days off?

MB: Spend time with my little boy and just being with him and my daughter in the future but she is little now. I don’t get to spend enough time with them because of my baseball schedule.

HS: What do you do for fun other then baseball?

MB: I like to shoot pool, watch some TV and hangout with the guys and relax at home.

HS: If you were not playing Baseball what else could you see yourself doing?

MB: I would be playing basketball and trying to go pro.

HS: Who are some of your peers that got game?

MB Carl Crawford ,Torii Hunter, Mike Trout, Joe Mauer and Jose Reyes are a couple.

HS: Plain and simple Usain Bolt or Michael Bourn?

MB: I don’t know we have never raced. But I got “Next Man Syndrome” if the man next to me can do something then I think I can do it just as good or better.

HS: Best baseball movie?

MB: I am not a baseball movie person; I like action and drama movies.

HS: Through hard work and determination you achieved your dream what advice would you give future major leaguers?

MB: I would tell them to work hard, enjoy the moment and never forget where you came from.
