We are back from an extended period of not writing articles here at the MLB Reports to weigh in on the World Series Odds for next campaign.
As we did last year, we will update this as a weekly segment for the next 10 months until the winner is crowned.
I can tell you right now, the favorites based on so-called “winning the offseason” hardly ever pay off. If that were the case, the Yankees would have been crowned last year, with spending $503 MIL on 10 Free Agents, or also the Rangers would have been second with bringing in Prince Fielder and Shin Soo-Choo.
The odds doled out for free wheeling Padres and Cubs are my top two picks to stay clear of wagering with the value currently constituted. There are two teams in a similar view, not given enough credit.
The White Sox are looking decent in the AL Central, and play in the fairest of the Division in the American League, boast a 1 – 2 that can battle you with Chris Sale and Jeff Samardzija, while inking Free Agents Adam LaRoche and David Robertson gives the team nice depth all around,
The ‘Southsiders’ are definitely much improved in every facet heading into 2015., To say the Cubs, with their exuberant youth has more of a chance to win the 2015 title is not justified without seeing them perform on the field yet.
I also love the Mariners range out of the 9th favorite slot, with another year for James Paxton and Taijuan Walker, joining the 1 – 2 combo of Felix Hernandez and Hisashi Iwakuma. The squad also added slugger Nelson Cruz to the fold.
Under the radar last season was the club dealing with lots of injuries. Add in the A’s potentially being weaker in the AL West, and the M’s could knock down the 2nd longest playoff drought in the Majors.
Your reigning League Pennant Winners from 2014, are both tied for 7th, and are not great picks for the money being paid out either. Let us remember they had just upper 80’s in wins each, held the 5th seed in the AL and NL, and could have easily missed the postseason outright.
The Giants are arguably worse so far in 2015, and the Royals have lost James Shields, Nori Aoki and Billy Butler, while adding Kendrys Morales, Edinson Volquez and Alex Rios. KC is still decent, but there could be a regression here.
Going on how San Francisco has fared the year following a title, it may not be worth plunking down any cabbage on them winning the championship in 2015.
All other positions are pretty well-marked for the right odds except for there are 2 more odds I like for value plays.
The Brewers at +3300 have good bang for the buck, with a team that led the NL Central for 150 days last season. The majority of Ron Roenicke‘s team returns in 2015, and I expect Ryan Braun to have a bounce back campaign next year.
The NL Central does have the Cardinals, however their top 3 players are another year older in Adam Wainwright, Matt Holliday and Yadier Molina, and can they really make it to the playoffs (yet alone the NLCS) for a 5th straight season? Probably, but being the 5th seed this early is not worth betting cash.
Perhaps the Red Birds can come out of the gate slow like 2014, build up their odd to a more reasonable level, before finishing strong one more time.
I also like the Texas Rangers at +4000. I am not saying they will win the whole thing… Just think a team with Yu Darvish fronting a starting rotation, with perennial MVP candidate Adrian Beltre, and big man Prince Fielder coming back, is bound to have a comeback season.
Add in Shin-Soo Choo playing to the back of his player card totals, and this team should be a contender anyway. You also shouldn’t see 20 DL stints at a time.
I can’t get over the Yankees being tied for 17th on this sheet, but it is a reflection on the club not being that good right now, and the professional gamblers are finally taking notice.
If I had to peg another odd I am not fond if, it is the Boston Red Sox…However, if they trade for a #1 with their 5 extra prospects and OF, they could be right in line with the number. Speculation has to be taken into consideration here.
