Carlos Gomez is having a breakout year for the Brewers, even with them in last place in the Central division. Where the team stands has not affected his play at all, with his .305 batting average and .895 OPS this season in 318 at-bats. He is sixth in NL with a with a .547 Slugging %, and fifth with 174 Total Bases. He has a WAR of 5.5 this is second in the NL, and his defensive WAR is second at 2.6. He is fifth in the NL with 174 Total Bases and is third with 42 XBH. He hits left-hander better than right-handers, with an average of .330 facing lefties, while righties the average is only .300

The players for the All-Star game that will take place at Citi Field were just announced over the past weekend and there were some surprises with all teams having at least one player represent their team.
The Milwaukee Brewers have not had had a good season with it starting in spring training.
They lost one of their potential their first baseman when Mat Gamel for the second straight year tore his ACL. They were optimistic that Corey Hart would be able to make a recovery from off season surgery on his right knee.
2012 Carlos Gomez Highlights- So Parental Guidance Is Advised:

Ryan Braun is normally a lock to have a great season with 30 or more homers and 100+ RBIs, but injuries have prevented him from having another MVP-type season. Braun for the past couple of season has been the Brewers focal point of their offense, but with him sidelined other players have stepped up in Gomez and Segura. An off year for Braun is good season for other players with him clubbing nine HRs and 36 RBIs to go along with a .304/..380/.887 triple-slash in 217 at-bats.
While he was rehabbing his right knee, they just found out that he will require surgery on his left knee, when he began feeling discomfort with that knee. So he will be gone for the rest of this season, and will a free-agent in 2014.
The Brewers are currently in last place in the National League Central division, and are looking up at their rivals the St. Louis Cardinals with them being in first place.
The main reason why they have the 2nd worst record in the NL is due to their pitching staff. The pitchers for their team have allowed 415 runs this season, and only the Houston Astros have allowed more with 470.
The Brewers have been looking for the heir apparent at first, ever since Prince Fielder left them when he signed with Detroit Tigers as a free-agent in 2012.
They have also had other key players missing during the season as well with third baseman Aramis Ramirez spending some time on the disabled list twice this season due to a left knee injury.
The best hitter on their team Ryan Braun was just activated to come off the D.L. for them, he has missed significant time because of a right thumb contusion. Since Braun was out, other players had to step up and replace the production that he normally provides.
One of these players is their All-Star shortstop Jean Segura. Segura has been a hitting machine this season with 113 hits in 86 games for the Brew Crew this season. He has a .323/.358/.849 triple-slash on the season with eight HRs and 36 RBIs.
He is also proving to be a threat on base paths with his speed. Segura has already swiped 27 bases, while only being caught three times. Another good thing him is that he does not strike out that much with him only striking out 44 times in 350 at-bats.
He is hitting .317 against right-handed hitters with an OPS of .817, while facing left-handers he has a better average of .336 and has a higher OPS of .921.
One encouraging sign about him is that when he hits away from Miller Park the batting average does not drop off significantly. He hits for an average of .328 to home, and his hitting .317 on the road.
He is a more than capable hitter with runners in scoring position, as indicated by his .295 average with 20 RBIs in 61 at-bats.
The Brewers acquired Segura when they traded Zack Greinke to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim just before the trade dealing in July 2012.
He is one of the bright spots on this Brewers team with them having a bad season. This is the type of player that you can build around to hopefully have success in the future.
Milwaukee has not one, but two players representing the team in this year’s All-Star game. Carlos Gomez made the team as well, and Gomez is not a player you would think has a chance to be considered an All-Star.
The numbers for him don’t lie; he is having a career year for the Brewers. Gomez has .308/.349/.901 triple-slash in 315 at-bats with 13 HRs and 41 RBIs in 315 at-bats.
This is somewhat shocking considering that before this season, he never had a batting average higher than .260 and his highest OPS were .768 in his six previous seasons in baseball.
This is either a fluke season for him, or just maybe he is finally figuring out how to be a productive hitter. I will reserve judgment until the end of the season, and see if he can keep up this pace.
He handles both right-hander and left-handers with relative ease, as his average is .300 facing right-handed pitchers and increases up to .330 against left-handers.
The only problem with him is that he is awful with runners in scoring position, as he only has a .240 batting average with a .727 OPS. If he improves in this area, he could be a great lead-off hitter for Milwaukee.
These two players made the All-Star team are they still flying under the radar. This is has a lot to due with the Brewers being in last place, and most last place teams rarely ever have two players make the All-Star squad.
These two players are special and deserve some recognition for their performance on a bad team.
The Brewers are probably going to lose close to 100 games this season, but Segura and Gomez are the lone bright spots for this team. They could be a great dynamic duo at the top of Brewers line up for years to come.

The Brewers acquired Segura in the deal that sent Zack Greinke to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. This is a trade that is paying huge dividends for Milwaukee right now. Segura is turning into a great hitter with his 113 hits on the season. He has a batting average of .320 and his OPS is .844 with 11 HRs and 36 RBIs. He is third in the NL in stolen bases with 27, and second in the NL with eight triples. He has an Offensive WAR of 3.6, which is third in the NL. Segura is also a good hitter with runners in scoring position, as indicated by his .290 average.

Today’s episode of The Sully Baseball Daily Podcast begins in Italian.
Why?
Because the wonderful Italian MLB Podcast Nel Nome del Gioco, gave me a nice notice and I am saying Grazie to the hosts Marco Barbanera and Pietro Striano.
As for San Francisco Giants fans… you are forbidden to watch today’s game. The team has been too cruel to you.
