With the Washington Nationals locking up Adam LaRoche to a new 2-year deal on Tuesday, it leaves 1B/OF Michael Morse without a starting roster spot. As many as 11 teams have been said to already be inquiring on Morse.

The 30-Year-Old, born and raised in Florida, mainly played left field for the Nationals last season. A position that the Detroit Tigers just so happen to be looking for.  The Tigers are currently sitting with a starting outfield of Andy Dirks, Austin Jackson, and newly signed Torii Hunter. Many feel that Dirks is not an everyday player but is better suited as a 4th Outfielder. He is able to play all 3 positions with above average defense.

In 2012, he played in only 88 games, mostly due to him battling an Achilles injury that sidelined him for nearly 2 months. He was able to put up some impressive numbers though – .322 BA, .370 OBP, 8 HRs, and 35 RBI. But can he do that while playing in 140 games? That’s what this upcoming season is all about. No one will deny that Dirks deserves a chance to start everyday, it’s about whether Tigers GM Dave Dombrowksi will let him.  Even with Dirks hitting .274 against Lefties last season, the Tigers still have been rumored to be looking for a Right-Handed hitting outfielder to platoon with him.

A role that Michael Morse just so happens to fit. He is a below average defender but he is a slight improvement over Delmon Young.  Morse is a Career .295 hitter and provides a little more power in the lineup (18 HRs, 62 RBIs in just 406 AB during the  2012 Year).  He is due to make $6.75 Million in 2013 and will be a Free Agent at season’s end. However, with 10 other MLB teams said to be interested, the price could get a little too steep. The Nationals are said be looking for lefty bullpen help and anything to help replenish farm system. The Tigers do have some young Lefty Pitchers that might spark some interest – Casey Crosby and Duane Below.  Drew Smyly is also an option but with all the Rick Porcello trade talks happening, the Tigers will likely hold on tight to him.

Morse has said that he does not want to be a Designated Hitter for a new team. That may shy away some of the teams interested.  But unfortunately for Morse, he does not have a no-trade clause in his contract so does not have a say in anything. Is he a good fit for the Tigers? A $6.75 Million Dollar bat with power is a bargain nowadays. He at least gives Andy Dirks another year to prove he belongs and to put all the doubters to shame.

Micheal Morse may be the type of guy that would catapult the Tigers back to a 2nd straight World Series. He hit .303, with 31 HRs and 95 RBI during the 2011 in 515 AB. This was his only real full year as a Starting Position Player.
