Scott Boras’s clients rarely sign long term extension with the teams that draft them, and retain their rights under team control, until they are eligible for Free Agency. There is no doubt that baseball must address the service time for players clauses, so that a player of Bryant’s pedigree, could be held out for financial implications solely. Since the team would lose the right to have Kris Bryant in 2021, should he start the opener, rather than hold him back 9 games and 12 service days to ensure that eligible year for the player, it has completely given the Cubs brass the overwhelming sense to start Bryant in the Minors.
