Avisail Garcia, 21-years-old, played in an Extended Spring Training – game and went 1 for 3, with 2 Walks, 1 Strikeout, and a Stolen Base.
He suffered a severely bruised right heel injury back on March 16th that has kept him sidelined until Saturday. His next step will be a Rehab Assignment, likely in Lakeland for a couple than up to Toledo.
The real decision is what the Tigers will do with him once he is ready for full duty.
Avisail Garcia – from Baseball Instinct:
No one really could have known if that spot was going to go to Garcia had he remained healthy but the Tigers didn’t have too many options at that point.
Matt Tuiasosopo obviously ended up with the spot but is there a chance that Garcia takes his spot once he’s healthy?
A young player like Garcia would benefit from another full year in the Minors, especially to work on his natural power ability that he has.
Although Tuiasosopo is hitting .278 with a .409 OBP – however his proven track record is impressive as seen in the aforementioned (Captioned Picture.) Even with this years decent start, with 84 games in the Majors – he is only hitting .185 with a .251 OBP.
Sure, we are all hoping this is a breakout year for him but no one is holding their breath. As soon as he begins to struggle he will more than likely be sent down.
But for what Right Handed hitting Outfielder?
Possibly, but the Tigers organization are really wanting him to develop and could be hesitant to call him up fearing it’s too early.
Very much expect a call up of Avisail Garcia before Castellanos, Garcia is also on the 40 Man Roster and Castellanos is not currently.
But what about good old Don Kelly? He is currently in a struggle, hitting just .118 with a .211 OBP. That seems like the logical choice to be sent down if the Tigers believe Garcia can help this team win right now.
With Tuiasosopo able to play Corner Infield, they’ll have no need for Kelly if Garcia comes up. The Tigers must keep this in mind with V-Mart struggling so far, plus with Prince Fielder and Cabrera needing maintenance days at DH as the season wanes on.
Fans in Detroit are most likely rooting for that decision.
Last year rookie OF Quintin Berry must be wondering about his future right about now? The man stole 21 Bases and plated 44 Runs in just 291 At-Bats during the 2012 campaign.
However, the club signed Torii Hunter for 2 years, liked Garcia a bit more out of Spring Training – while keeping Andy Dirks to patrol the other OF position. Berry’s problem is that he is also a LHB like Dirks. He is simply caught up in a numbers game now – playing in Toledo thus far in 2013.
Another possibility down the road is: any assortment of these Outfielders may be used as Trade Bait – in order to obtain a proven Closer to nail down games. It has been a position that Leyland and Co. have worried about all year – and GM Dombrowski will certainly address it.
In two to three years time, the landscape may look a lot different with Hunter not being there anymore and Austin Jackson being a Free Agent in 2016. This club must be patient with their young talent. There is no need to rush the players – as long as the guys in the Majors right now are doing their hon
Only time will tell and Garcia obviously needs to ensure he is healthy enough from the nagging heel injury. He should be able to get enough At-Bats in the Majors to stay sharp and with ‘Big Brother’ Miguel Cabrera watching over him, does it really hurt his development?
