The New York Yankees Are Back Folks!

Friday June 29th, 2012

John Burns:  As July approaches, the New York Yankees have one of the best records in baseball with a record of 46-29.

One of the main reasons for the great play of New York has been the long ball, which the Yankees lead all of baseball with a team total of 118 homers. Curtis Granderson (21 HR), Robinson Cano (18 HR), Mark Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez (13 HR each) have shown the most power for NY this season so far, but really the majority of the lineup has been fairly steady al year for this team.

The Bronx Bomber’s strength is their lineup, filled with MVP candidates and All-Stars from top to bottom. New York currently has four players (Swisher, Granderson, Teixeira, and Cano) in their everyday lineup with over 40 RBIs each. Offense carries this ball club and now with the recent injuries to Andy Pettitte and CC Sabathia, it will have to provide even more.

New York has had to deal with a lot injuries this season and it is unbelievable how good they still are. Key players like Michael Pineda, Brett Gardner, Ivan Nova, Nick Swisher, Sabathia, Pettitte, David Robertson, and Mariano Rivera have all had some kind of an injury this season. Pineda and Rivera are out for the season and both were vital to the Yankees pitching staff. Even through all these injuries, the Yankees still have the 2nd best record in baseball. But if they want to keep that up, they will have to make some moves by the July trading deadline.

With pitchers like Zack Greinke, Matt Garza, and Ryan Dempster all available the Yanks must pursue one of those pitchers to help out the banged up pitching staff. The Yanks have been linked to Cubs pitcher Matt Garza and it has been reported that the Yankees prefer Garza over Greinke. Can Greinke hold up to the pressure of NY? The Yanks sure don’t want to take that chance and have it explode in their face (remember Kenny Rogers?)

Even if the Yanks can acquire a stud pitcher at the deadline, the other pitchers must step up. Phil Hughes has to take to role as a starter and continue to be consistent. Hughes needs to keep up his 2010 form when he won 18 games in 176 innings pitched. The reality is that the Yankees have to add pitching depth because Andy Pettitte was placed on the 60 day DL and the team will not last this long without CC and Pettitte.

The way the NY lineup is built, it can carry a poor pitching staff for extended periods. Expect players like A-Rod, Cano, and Granderson to carry the load on offense. How the Yankees have continued to play through injuries this season through their key players shows me they are ready to make a deep playoff run. Who knows…they might even be ready to win their 28th World Series Championship.
