The Dodgers may only be 14 – 12, but they are just 1 game behind the San Francisco Giants in the NL West. They are still the co-favorites to win the World Series. Considering they have seen one start from Clayton Kershaw, and now he is on his way back to joining the team, I would say this team is in the drivers seat. Los Angeles made it to the NLCS last year, severely upgraded their Bullpen – and still possess a ridiculous amount of talent in the OF – and at Starting Pitching. You have to think they will be able to win this Division. With Milwaukee staking themselves to a big lead over St. Louis at least right now – before they have run into injuries, and with the Braves and Nats both having guys on the mend, those Division may be more in the air. Once the playoffs would set in, I would take the LAD Pitching Staff and Lineup combined over any other team. Thus this is why we have ranked them so high so far in our weekly 1 – 30 list. Detroit has a lot of similarities. These two teams also have an easier path to to ply through, with CWS/CLE and MIN in the AL Central, and ARI/SD both a little shaky to begin the 2014 campaign. Teams that the Division favorites play 19 times each.

The Blue Jays will exercise their team option on lefty starter J.A. Happ, paying $6.7MM rather than a $200K buyout, CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman tweets. Prior to the 2013 season, the Jays signed Happ to a one-year, $5.4MM extension for 2014 that included the option they’re exercising now. He can become a free agent after the coming season. Happ pitched 158 innings […]
The Dodgers have declined their option on starting pitcher Chad Billingsley, Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times tweets. Given the cost of the option ($14MM minus a $3MM buyout) and Billingsley’s struggles to stay healthy, the move comes as no surprise. Billingsley was once among baseball’s more promising young arms, but he’s pitched only 12 big league […]
The Rockies have announced that they’ve exercised their option on closer LaTroy Hawkins, paying him $2.25MM rather than a $250K buyout. In addition, they’ve outrighted 1B/OF Matt McBride. Hawkins, who will be 42 in December, posted a solid 3.31 ERA in 2014, striking out just 5.3 batters per nine innings but limiting walks, with just 2.2 BB/9. Hawkins continu […]
